Another day, another Albany bribery scandal - but the real crime is what's perfectly legal. What are the prospects now for public financing of state legislative campaigns?

Please join New Kings Democrats and Citizen Action of New York for a panel discussion with special guests from the Brennan Center and Common Cause.

The timing of the latest scandals is propitious for putting the pressure on Governor Cuomo, who promised to include public financing in his much-heralded "ethics package."

Please join us on Wednesday - bring your ideas and your energy.

Charity pol probed -AG eyeing Huntley over shady nonprofit

The state Attorney General's Office is investigating state Sen. Shirley Huntley and her ties to nonprofits that have soaked taxpayers for more than $400,000, The Post has learned.

News of the probe comes a week after The Post revealed the Queens Democrat tried to funnel $155,000 to her Parent Workshop nonprofit and as new questions emerge about the shady group.

State records show that a $30,000 member item secured by Huntley in 2008 for The Parent Workshop went to two consultants, one of whom was listed as living in a Huntley family home.

Sherman Russell, 71, received $15,000 in 2008 and 2009 from the nonprofit founded by Huntley, purportedly to conduct workshops for parents and students on navigating the school system, the documents show.

This Is Disgusting (0.00 / 0)
And makes Dems look like stupid sleeze.  I hope we can learn to elect HONEST pols that don't have their hands in the till. What's our problem and why aren't Republicans getting caught because we know they're doing things like this also.

Don't be fooled (0.00 / 0)
The thrust of this campaign finance effort is to bring an NYC-style matching funds system to state elections. They'll even produce a study that purports to show that the NYC system makes a real difference.

Don't be fooled.

The NYC system is a colossal waste of money. It doesn't change who gets elected, how they get elected, of what they do once they are elected.

There's a lot more; if you can make it, come to the forum tomorrow and watch the lightning.

Thanks to David Noriega for a fine article about this event on Huffington Post:

Far from fine (0.00 / 0)
He merely regurgitated what was spouted from the dais.

One example of what was just wrong: He mentions the court case that will have an impact on Clean Elections systems. He fails to mention (because he doesn't know anything but what he heard that night) that the same court decision will have the same effect on an NYC-type system. In fact, the NYC system is already toast because the 2nd Circuit has already ruled.

The difference is that there are fixes for Clean Elections systems available (Connecticut has already enacted one), but nobody has come up with a fix for NYC -- except for replacing it with a Clean Elections system.

I'll say it again: Don't be fooled! The NYC system is a complete failure. The groups that seek to enact it in NY state are just so battle-weary after over 15 years of failure that they are willing to accept anything just so they can declare victory and go home.
