Late Night Miscellany and Open Thread

More stuff I really Didn't have time to get to today. Plus some fun stuff.

  • New Jersey's Assembly and Senate both passed legislation establishing "civil unions" today. Fellow soapblox heroes Blue Jersey have been pushing some really great ads that they produced on the subject. And now they're going broadcast!

It's official. The first Think Equal ad will soon be on television thanks to help from Garden State Equality.

Well done! Here's my fave of the four ads they made.

  • phillip anderson :: Late Night Miscellany and Open Thread
  • MattK D1 posts a pretty bleak diary about Elmira and western NY in General. Go check it out and take the poll. I loved this part:

but if Bruno and Silver think this system works, and if some in Albany feel they deserve a pay raise for how shiny they have polished the faucets in the bathrooms on the Titanic, maybe they need to come out here a bit more.

  • NYBri and I are part of the problem. What? You didn't know?

  • Spitzer sums up the Pataki era: "12 long, vapid years"

  • Charlie Rangel pulls no punches when asked about what Democrats should do about Iraq:

"I never understand that question," answered Charlie Rangel, the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. "You have a President that's in deep shit. He got us into the war, and all the reasons he gave have been proven invalid, and the whole electorate was so pissed off that they got rid of anyone they could have, and then they ask, `What is the Democrats' solution?'"

  • The NY Post says the Albany DA has got enough dirt to indict Alan Hevesi on criminal charges.

  • EnWhySeaWonk at Room 8 with some rather disturbing imagery:

Chatting with a political friend on mine today on the phone we, naturally, got on the topic of the latest political indictment. My friend's comment was that he'd never met Senator González, but that "he looked like Jabba the Hutt." I looked him up and well, you be the judge.

  • Yellow Rat Bastard lives up to its name.

  • the Drum Major Institute releases its Year in Review.

This was the year of Systems Failure. Most Americans were tired of the status quo-on the war, on the economy, on the lapsed ethics of those entrusted to represent our interests. The result: on Election Day, they rebooted, ready to try again.

The report also includes a section titled "The Year in the Netroots" which strangely omits any mention of THE netroots news of the year

    What's up with that?

What's happening in your corner of the Empire State?

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Does anyone know how to file an ethics complaint (4.00 / 1)
against a legislator?  I've looked over the ethics commission's website and couldn't find anything.

    a fine question (4.00 / 1)
and one that i don't have an answer for.

should you find out how, i hope you'll post about it here. that's good info to have.

that said, i'm not surprised that the ethics commission site is, ahem, less than helpful in that regard...

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Yeah, I was expecting the site to be opaque (4.00 / 1)
I think I heard once that any taxpayer can file one.  I'll keep researching.
