The Scheme To Repeal Marriage Equality

by: Clarknt67

Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 23:44:59 PM EDT

Legislative mastermind Brian Brown of National Organization For Marriage (NOM) has revealed the group's brilliant 4-year plan for undoing marriage equality in the Empire State.

Here it is:

Oh wait, that's not it. That's the Underpants Gnomes get rich scheme.

Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown's get rich scheme fleecing ignorant and hateful people of New York after the fold.

Clarknt67 :: The Scheme To Repeal Marriage Equality
From NOM's blog:

PHASE 1:
Elect pro-marriage majorities next November that will approve a marriage amendment in both the Assembly and Senate during the 2013 legislative session.

PHASE 2:
Protect pro-marriage candidates in the 2014 elections, so that the amendment can receive final legislative approval in the 2015 legislative session.

PHASE 3:
Successfully pass the ballot measure when it goes before voters in November 2015.

A 4-year process seems like a long time-and it is-but it's achievable.

Sure it is. Of course, this can only be accomplished if people give money, give money, give money.

But if I may, I'd like to suggest a faster, easier, more realistic route:

PHASE 1:
Obtain a nuclear missile, point it at the moon.

PHASE 2:
Issue a directive to the New York legislature and the Governor demanding marriage equality be repealed immediately or the moon will be destroyed.

PHASE 3:
Detonate missile on Fire Island to celebrate victory over teh evil gays.

Easy.

And where do the people... (4.00 / 1)
You know, the New Yorkers that support marriage equality by wide margins, fit into all of this, assuming, hypothetically, that marriage equality actually did make it to the ballot like that?

Of course, by that time I don't think there's much of anything NOM will be able to do because the Supreme Court will have ruled there is a constitutional right to marriage equality.

You misunderstand, (4.00 / 1)
According to the out of state special interest group NOM, marriage equality was shoved down the throats of New Yorkers by backroom deals with special interest groups.

In reality, there is a broad grassroots support for repealing this. Did you see the poll that NOM commissioned of senior citizens that showed 57% of New Yorkers reject marriage equality?

Because those demographics... (0.00 / 0)
clearly reflect New York with it being too old and too Republican.  Since I don't watch it, just how much did Fox decide to run with this?  Or was it so bad that not even Fox would run with it?

[ Parent ]
I too spare myself the horror (4.00 / 1)
Of watching Fox. It did not appear to me anyone gave the poll much, if any notice. They commission a "polling" firm in every state to fabricate the results they want.

[ Parent ]
Yeah... (4.00 / 1)
but usually they'll do a better job than that in getting the "results" that they want.  I probably could have done better with my law degree and one semester of undergrad statistics I took when I once thought I'd go the JD/CPA route.

[ Parent ]
excellent analogy, by the way (4.00 / 1)
...can anyone give me an update, as to whether those little gnomes' plan succeeded in making them a profit?

Why would any Conservative want to see this repealed? (4.00 / 1)
This is a fund raising windfall, like abortion.  These issues get people to open their checkbooks like substantive issues (e.g., Healthcare Reform) do not.

This is an annuity for the Conservative Party and an excuse to primary people like Roy McDonald who thinks he will get money from liberal interests to protect his seat.

I'm thrilled you think that (0.00 / 0)
because it's proof how conservatives are going to kill themselves off.  Marriage equality is not abortion.  Look at the polls, look at the money, and look at the trend.  Heck, it was Republican donors who were the main thrust behind passage of marriage equality.

But please, double down on opposing marriage equality.  I would like nothing more than to see Republicans continue to sit on the wrong side of history.

[ Parent ]
I don't think he was opposing it personally (0.00 / 0)
But just commenting on how the right (and the left too) can use divisive wedge issues to fundraise by keeping them in play indefinitely.

And in fact the National Organization For Marriage is already exploiting the loss to bilk rubes into donating on the false promise of a reversal, which no rational person recognizes as anything but an extreme outside long shot. (I never say never in politics, but come on!)

But I agree with you, the mainstream politicos will move on, which is why it passed. Both parties wanted to close the book on the issue. It does not have the shelf life of abortion. This wedge has lost it's edge in NY.

After they fail to extract their pound of flesh in the 2012 cycle, the far right in NY will give up and find another issue to bitch about in 2014.

[ Parent ]
Politically? How about legally? NYS is not an (0.00 / 0)
inititive, referendumm and recall state.

The Conservative Party can use this to raise money even while knowing repeal wil never get anywhere.  Even in California, this change does not seem to survive at the polls, however, if you can't trigger a big, emotionally fraught election, this will not be changed.

None the less, I suspect Roy McDonald is the new Clint Dominick.
