Meet the real Ron Paul.

by: Adama D. Brown

Sat Dec 31, 2011 at 15:26:49 PM EST

Lately I've noticed an uptick online in the number of people trying to sway the left wing over into supporting Ron Paul. Some of this may be driven by Salon columnist Glenn Greenwald, who has been singing Paul's praises as an anti-war, anti-imperialist libertarian hero for liberals. (As opposed to Greenwald's portrayal of President Obama as a warmongering neo-fascist who didn't really end the Iraq War, Bush deserves that credit thank-you-very-much.)

Of course, there's the little complication to that that Paul is neither "libertarian" nor "anti-war" in any way, having supported the Iraq War until it turned out bad, has previously supported attacking Iran, and supports the criminalization of abortion and homosexuality. But then, you could say that about most of the Republican candidates.

No, where Ron Paul really stands out is where he actually departs from the Republican pack. Less in what he believes than in what he's actually willing to say, or was willing a few years ago. You may have heard about his controversial newsletters, but I guarantee you haven't heard even a fraction of the worst of them, simply because you can't read the worst of them on TV.

No, it's not just a few vague quotes taken completely out of context. In fact, Paul's newsletters read like a "greatest hits" album of far right bigotry, conspiracy theories, and violent propaganda. The following quotes were all taken newsletters operated by Ron Paul and published between 1985 and 1994.

Those who don't commit sodomy, get blood transfusions, or swap needles are virtually assured of not getting AIDS unless they are deliberately infected by a malicious gay.

If you heard a certain behavior of yours caused a deadly disease, wouldn't you immediately cease & desist? Well, gays in San Francisco do not obey the dictates of good sense. They have stopped practicing "safe sex." The rate of AIDS infection is on the increase again. From the gay point of view, the reasons seem quite sensible.

First, these men don't really see a reason to live past their fifties. They are not married, they have no children, and their lives are centered on new sexual partners. These conditions do not make one's older years the happiest.

Second, because sex is the center of their lives, they want it to be as pleasurable as possible, which means unprotected sex.

Third, they enjoy the attention & pity that comes with being sick. Put it all together, and you've got another wave of AIDS infections, that you, dear taxpayer, will be asked to pay for.

A mob of black demonstrators, led by the "Rev." Al Sharpton, occupied and closed the Statue of Liberty recently, demanding that New York be renamed Martin Luther King City "to reclaim it for our people."

Hmm. I hate to agree with the Rev. Al, but maybe a name change is in order. Welfaria? Zooville? Rapetown? Dirtburg? Lazyopolis?

But Al, the Statue of Liberty? Next time, hold that demonstration at a food stamp bureau or a crack house.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the face of what the right wing really believes but can no longer say openly. It's also why anyone who thinks that Ron Paul is anything other than a wretched sack of human bile, no matter his positions on a few issues, is badly mistaken. That you agree with a Republican on something doesn't make the Republican right, it makes them only slightly less wrong.

And make no mistake: Paul's crime in Republican politics is not to believe this, but to have it committed to paper in no uncertain terms. Look at every other Tea Party approved Republican, and tell me they would disagree on substance, instead of on language.

Remember that the next time that someone tells you that there's no real difference between the parties; the next time someone expresses admiration for Ron Paul; and most importantly, remember it when it comes time to choose between apathy, and fighting like hell to elect Democrats.

misrepresenting Greenwald (0.00 / 0)
Greenwald doesn't claim that Paul is a hero for liberals, or that he'd make a better President than Obama. He's using his current anti-war position to highlight the pro-war stances not only of the rest of the Republican fold but those of a large majority of Democrats including the sitting President.

It's not an endorsement or broadly applied praise, but rather focused praise on individual positions with which Greenwald agrees and to which he wants to draw attention and further support.  The goal isn't to get Paul elected but rather to pressure other politicians to reconsider or else defend their stances on the military aggression of the United States.

Greenwald completely misrepresents Paul's positions. (4.00 / 2)
He lauds the supposed positive, while completely burying and ignoring the much more extensive negative. It's sort of like saying "Yes, Hitler had issues with anti-semitism, but he loved children, was a vegetarian, and supported affordable transportation for the public." It might be technically true, but that doesn't make the man worthy of the praise. It's spin, plain and simple.

No he doesn't. (4.00 / 1)
"It's perfectly legitimate to criticize Paul harshly and point out the horrible aspects of his belief system and past actions. But that's worthwhile only if it's accompanied by a similarly candid assessment of all the candidates, including the sitting President."

That's the short version of what Greenwald has repeatedly said about Paul. If one thinks that it's very important to confront the nation's imperial addictions, as Greenwald does and a great many people other do, then Paul's presence as a candidate has considerable potential value.

Does Paul really deserve a Hitler comparison? Obama is without question directly responsible for the killings of a great many people who did nothing to harm or threaten him or the US. And he loves children too. (And pets!) If inappropriately praising Ron Paul is like inappropriately praising Hitler, where does that leave praising or defending the guy who is actually having people killed on a daily basis?

A fair read of his NYE column on Salon disproves this (0.00 / 0)
If you hadn't read his column on Salon the morning of the day that you posted this, you should do so. If you had, I don't know how you would come away from it believing that Greenwald considers Paul to be a hero for liberals (outside of being a tool for opening up debate).

He makes very clear that he is attempting an ideological, non-partisan debate separate from the political race for office. In fact, he all but describes how he'd go about reluctantly endorsing Obama when he describes the rational argument for doing so.

I think Greenwald is correct that a discussion of Paul's positions makes liberals really uncomfortable because, regardless of Paul's nature and whether it'd be worse to vote for him than Obama in an election, some of his positions are more closely aligned with liberal ideals than Obama's and he is alone in them.

The takeaway isn't to vote for Paul, or even to neglect to vote for Democrats over Republicans when given the chance, but to be cognizant of the rightward shift in national politics and to hold Democrats accountable for this.  In my view, it's sensible to be a partisan in a general election and an ideologue in a primary.  My defense of Greenwald is that I don't think would dispute that or recommend another civic behavior; rather, he views his role as pushing the boundaries of the ideological debate with thought challenges.

The reality (0.00 / 0)
is that Greenwald is a libertarian who absolutely hates Obama, and has been called out on that serially over the past several years.

The problem with Ron Paul is that people like you keep cherry-picking his stances, and recasting them into what you'd like to hear.  For a limited set of things, his "civil libertarian" stance resonates, but then you have to look at his foreign policy, financial stances, and blatant dog-whistling racism as well.   None of which could be considered "progressive," and in fact, even Republicans call "insane."

"libertarians" and people like me (0.00 / 0)
Greenwald is perhaps a libertarian with a lower-case "l" (as opposed to a Libertarian partisan), as he likely wouldn't object to being known as a civil libertarian, i.e. someone who fights for the protection of civil liberties.

It's also hyerbolic and not supported by evidence to say that he "hates" Obama; he has given Obama credit for many things and often goes to great lengths to properly qualify his criticisms when he offer them. I think he rightly considers it patriotic to express dissent, and if he's disgusted by anyone it's Obama apologists.

It's alarming to me that anyone would attempt to use those as loaded words the way that people on the right do with "liberal"; no one who stops for a second to think about "liberty" as the founding fathers did should think that there's anything in that to disparage.

Finally as to the ad hominem aside, I'm not a supporter of Ron Paul nor do I recast his stances as what I want them to be. I'm trying to make clear that in part because Paul is unelectable (at the national level) and is rightly regarded overall as a kook, it's possible to cherry-pick among his positions to highlight particular valid ones that but for him would be left out of the national debate entirely.

It's the old proverb that even a broken (or batshit insane) clock is right twice a day. As a candidate with a megaphone in the spotlight, there's value in shouting the "correct time" at those moments when every other clock is wired to be wrong at those times. That's not to say that you should set your watch to the broken clock.

I think it's important to distinguish between a politician as a person and their positions and actions.  That's why when one criticizes Obama or gives credit to Paul on particular issues, it doesn't generalize to how one feels about them overall.

reduce the size and scope of government and get the Consolidated laws and the NYCRR under control.  Otherwise, people will continue to flee to places where there is opportunity.
