Redistricting maps out: New lines, old attitudes.

by: Adama D. Brown

The proposed LATFOR redistricting maps are out for the State Senate and the Assembly. The changes... wait, you were expecting changes? Well, there are some, and at least none of the new proposed districts are more than 120 miles or so long. Although that's a really, really low bar.

Most interesting from a competitive perspective is, of course, the State Senate:

Full Senate maps can be found here, and Assembly maps found here. No word yet on Congressional districts.

Complete and utter garbage (0.00 / 0)
I'd thought that, given the uproar around these things, they might actually come up with maps that at least looked vaguely sane.

Even this admitted hackjob looks saner:

I keep waiting for an epidemic of shame to hit Albany, but apparently they've all been immunized.

Agreed, complete and utter garbage. (0.00 / 0)
Cuomo had better stick to his promise and veto this trash.  The courts would have to do better than this.  We have OK courts.

District 60 (0.00 / 0)
Nothing like a district that has to run for a few miles along a completely unpopulated coastline to get to where the Senator intended for the Gerrymander actually lives.

To get a really good look at district 60 (0.00 / 0)
Look at the map for district 63. District 60 is off to the left of it. Yes, there is in fact a street to the left of it.

Sheldon Silver ar work (0.00 / 0)
to eliminate the as many of the freshman Republicans from Suffolk to Erie and even change the district that Democrat Bob Reilly represents since he came within a few hundred votes of losing in 2010.

I'm not saying what's ok, (0.00 / 0)
Just that this should not be.

I'm unfamiliar with the Assembly but a look through my previous posts will give you a hint as to my views on Silver.

The people of Suffolk County should be outraged! (0.00 / 0)
They slice and dice beyond community recognition. LI population is roughly 1.5 million Suffolk, 1.35 million Nassau County. At over 300K per Senate seat Suffolk and Nassau should each have four full districts with a fifth solidly in Suffolk County. This incumbent protection map gives Suffolk four seats and by making two big knife stabs into Suffolk succeeded in giving Nassau control of five seats. The people of Suffolk have a right to express outrage that their rightful voice based on their population will NOT be politically heard in Albany! The people of Suffolk need to ask some very serious questions to State Senators Zeldin, LaValle, Flannagan and Johnson as to why they sold out their counties rightful representation in the chamber just so their five Republican colleagues in the neighboring county can maintain their seats!

I find myself confused (0.00 / 0)
Why is Monroe County, with a lesser population than Erie, divided more ways than the latter?
