Saturday Morning Quick Hits

by: NYBri

Sat Dec 16, 2006 at 11:31:09 AM EST

Couple of quick questions this morning. First up:

- With a hat tip to Ben Smith's anonymous pork anthologist, we all now have a handy dandy spreadsheet to look through all the Senate and Assembly Pork. Link is supplied under "resources" in the left column.

Question: Why has it taken the amazing wycats here and Ben's apa to make this information people friendly?

If we, the wheel, squeek enough, perhaps the dysfunctional legislature will give us some grease.

- Check out this article from the Times this morning about Joe "the glitch" Bruno's Evident problem. Article is a banner reason why transparency is needed in Albany.

But, among the sleeze, one thing caught my eye. Check out the following photo:

Nice. Joe. Horses. Land. Farm.

Question: How does a State Senator afford all that?

He cashed in a telecomm related business in bygone years, which may help explain some of the "living large" lifestyle.

Incidentally, you can look at five years of financial disclosure forms for State Legislators nationwide on the center for Public Integrity's website.  Here's a link to the page with the NY legislators' filings:

Keep on digging.

Would you posting something soon?

Here's a tidbit from an old NY Time article (0.00 / 0)
(Nov. 26, 1994)
In 1959, Mr. Bruno and a partner founded the Coradian Corporation, a company that sold commercial telephone systems in the Northeast and Midwest. The company flourished, at least in part because of business from state and local governments where Mr. Bruno had political influence. Those ties, and the possible conflicts of interest they posed, were investigated by the Governor's Commission on Government Integrity in the late 1980's, although the commission ultimately found more fault with the state's conflict-of-interest laws than with Mr. Bruno.

When Mr. Bruno sold the company to Mitel Systems Integrators Inc. in 1990, it had 700 employees. The sale made Mr. Bruno a wealthy man, although he said today that "I don't live a wealthy life style."

Unfortunately, no time to do a diary. I'm sure there's lots of information out there--and anyone who's lived in the area for decades probably knows his backstory. In fact, most of this I heard from my parents years ago--they found his "cut state spending" platform remarkable considering all the money he made supplying the state with phone systems.

Gotta be because those two have far more technological resources and staff than the State of New York. It must have broken a lot of hearts in Albany to let the data go out like that, but, doggone it, spreadsheets are hard!

Link does not include the senate data (0.00 / 0)
Great to see the link up.  I tried it out but the spread sheet only had the assembly data  - not the senate data.  I think its the first version of the spread sheet posted by Ben.

Cheers
