Much of US favors Bush impeachment: poll

Nearly half of the US public wants President George W. Bush to face impeachment, and even more favor that fate for Vice President Dick Cheney, according to a poll out Friday.

The survey by the American Research Group found that 45 percent support the US House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against Bush, with 46 percent opposed, and a 54-40 split in favor when it comes to Cheney.

...

But Democratic leaders appear unlikely to pursue such a course.

45-46 is debatable (4.00 / 2)
But there is no excuse for leaving Cheney untouched.

Actually, if we impeach Cheney, Bush will have to appoint a replacement and that replacement will simultaenously become

1) the GOP nomination front-runner in 08

and

2) permanently linked to the policies of Bush's failed presidency, thus making him (and I say him because the neanderthal GOP will never support a woman for national office) incredibly ulikely to win the general election and all but assure a Democratic victory for POTUS.

Interesting nugget (4.00 / 2)
By comparison, at the height of the Lewinsky scandal, just after Bill Clinton made his televised mea culpa to the nation and the House Judiciary Committee was deliberating the case, an October 4 CBS opinion poll found only 38% of Americans favored a course that would begin impeachment proceedings against the president.

Impeachment (4.00 / 1)
Matt Stoller gave a speech today at NOI, and he says impeachment just isn't actionable, given the fact that only ~11 house members are co-sponsors.. according to him, there's just not an effective coalition in place to move forward.

Peter King writes me Nasty Letters.

Maurice Hinchey's office sez.... (4.00 / 5)
Maurice is not a sponsor (although you would perhaps expect him to be, given his views) that Nancy Pelosi has "taken it off the table" at the beginning of her tenure as Speaker.  So, he is not bucking leadership.  I think that is the case for a lot of potential sponsors.

Our Dem leaders have to learn that "stay the course" is a losing strategy.  Times change.  It's "time" to impeach-- it would truly help in re-establishing our nation's standing in the eyes of he rest of the world, if nothing else.  Complicity is embarrassing.

i don't disagree with matt (0.00 / 0)
but that's all i'm gonna say at the moment as i pledged to post this "without comment".

TODAY is day one. It always is.

54-40 -- let's fight (4.00 / 2)
Cheney well deserves the black mark of impeachment, even if conviction seems unlikely now.

And the Democrats in Congress must understand that their supporters, now a majority of the country, actually like it when politicians fight for issues that have majority support.

And when political criminals are held accountable for their crimes.
