SD-61: Sources say Rath will retire at the end of term

Several sources have told me that Republican Sen. Mary Lou Rath (NY-61) will not seek reelection this year and retire.

The 61st Senate District encompasses all of Genesee County and the northern part of Erie County.

This is significant since Rath's seat has been hard to contend with in the past in a district with only 8,000 more Republicans than Democrats. There aren't any confirmed candidates on either side, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out. There are a lot of Democrats in that area who are excited about this announcement tonight. SD-61 might become, if not a top-tier seat, at least a target on the Democratic radar in November.

....how many of the GOP Senators who have been on the Bruno Gravey Train for so long want to be in the *(gasp)* minority? Not very many, I would imagine.

I know that Senators, like my one-time opponent, Steve Saland, CERTAINLY won't want to stick around. How else would they argue for re-election if they didn't have Bruno's member item bribe money to pass out? They may have to actually run on their records...Horrors...and even worse, actually have to campaign and go out and meet and speak with people.

No, she won't be alone.

We've got some work ahead of us.

a rash of retirements, now is the time we're going to start hearing about them. i really wouldn't be surprised if there aren't a few more of these folks deciding that the time to get going is right about now. life in the senate majority sucks and they know it.

Has about 8,000 more Republicans than Democrats. Meaning, a strong (and popular) Democrat can win that seat. It seems like the Rath retirement has brought forth some people (including at least two Erie County legislators) who are now interested in that seat because, well, they can win now.
