| Translation: "Drop Dead". The panel reviewing candidates to fill the state Comptroller's job has apparently decided to tell Shelly to go stick it by choosing three, not five candidates, none of whom are from the Silver-dominated state Assembly. The Daily Politics has the dirt.
Rocking the boat, big time
The panel screening candidates for state controller has just released its list of three finalists -- not five -- and none of the four Assembly members vying for the job made the cut.
The picks are investment banker Bill Mulrow, New York City Finance Commissioner Martha Stark and Nassau County Controller Howard Weitzman.
This sets up a confrontation with Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who has expressed a preference for electing one of his members and threatened to ignore the panel's findings if it sent less than five names.
Take that, Shelly! The full statement from the panel (via DP) after the jump... |

| Here's the statement just released from the panel:
Former New York City Comptroller Harrison J. Goldin and former New York State Comptrollers H. Carl McCall and Ned Regan have selected William J. Mulrow, Martha E. Stark and Howard S. Weitzman as qualified candidates for New York State Comptroller, the three former comptrollers announced today. Governor Eliot Spitzer, Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver had asked Messrs. Goldin, McCall and Regan to select up to five qualified candidates to succeed former New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi. Senator Bruno and Speaker Silver had previously committed publicly that the New York State Legislature would limit its selection of the next State Comptroller to candidates approved by the three former comptrollers.
Earlier this week the three former comptrollers attended over 17 hours of public hearings in Albany at which 18 individuals presented their qualifications to the State Senate Finance Committee and the Assembly Ways and Means Committee. The 18 candidates filed applications last week to be considered as candidates for State Comptroller following a public invitation by the Governor and legislative leaders that interested parties file notice of their interest with the Legislature.
"We were impressed with the thoughtfulness of all the candidates and the thoroughness and care with which they were questioned by members of the Finance and Ways and Means Committees," Messrs. Goldin, McCall and Regan said. "After careful consideration of all the candidates and a review of their backgrounds, experience and credentials, we have concluded that Messrs. Mulrow and Weitzman and Ms. Stark are all qualified to be State Comptroller."
What's interesting to me is the one name I thought would surely be on the list, Tom DiNapoli's.
Get yer popcorn and pull up a chair. This one should be fun to watch. |
