NY-SD7: Is WellCare Evading Campaign Contribution Limits for O'Connell?

by: SteveWFP

Mon Jan 29, 2007 at 10:26:00 AM EST

(Typical. Had enough? - promoted by lipris)

More questions are coming out about Maureen O'Connell's fundraising.  From today's New York Times under "Supporters in Insuance":
Speaking of that Long Island Senate race, the Republican candidate, Maureen O'Connell, below, appears to be in good standing with the insurer WellCare.

According to campaign finance filings released Friday evening, the health insurer appears to have donated more than the $5,000 corporate limit to Ms. O'Connell's campaign by using a common tactic: also donating through three of its divisions. All told, the company and its divisions, all listing the same post office box in Tampa, Fla., gave $20,000 to Ms. O'Connell's campaign, which had no comment. Many corporate interests see Senate Republicans as important allies to play against the Spitzer administration and the Democrats who control the Assembly. WellCare did not return a call for comment.

What do you want to bet that call for comment never gets returned?

If you think this kind of thing has gone on for to long then you need to get involved in this race.

Is Samson Evading Campaign Contribution Limits for O'Connell? (0.00 / 0)
Well not the only ones. From my diary the other day http://www.thealbany...

What do these maxed out contributors have in common???
2 NORTH BROADWAY LLC, 99-77 Queens Blvd, Ste 710, Rego Park NY 11374 8,500.00 1/16
33 LOUDOUN STREET LLC, 99-77 Queens Blvd, Ste 710, Rego Park NY 11374 8,500.00 1/16
40 BARKER AVENUE LLC, 99-77 Queens Blvd, Ste 710, Rego Park NY 11374 8,500.00 1/16
GARTHWOOD APARTMENTS LLC, 99-77 Queens Blvd, Ste 710, Rego Park NY 11374 8,500.00 1/16
LARCHMONT ACRES EAST LLC, 99-77 Queens Blvd, Ste 710, Rego Park NY 11374 8,500.00 1/16
RIVER PARK APARTMENTS LLC, 99-77 Queens Blvd, Ste 710, Rego Park NY 11374 8,500.00 1/16

And the answer is: Samson Management Corp, guess what their address is?

Those look like individual contributions (0.00 / 0)
who have donated the max and all work together, not a corporation playing a shell game to avoid the legal limit.

Individual Contributions? Doubtful. Here's A More Obvious Case (4.00 / 1)
Try this one on for size.

1)From the FEC campaign contribution database (dated 3-14-2006), we have

Leonard Litwin
1200 Union Turnpike
New Hyde Park, NY 11040
President CEO
Glenwood Management

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

2)From the FEC database, we also have (in entry C at the bottom):

Leonard Litwin
1200 Union Turnpike
New Hyde Park, NY 11040
CEO/Partner
Arwin 88th Street LLC

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

3)So Litwin = 1200 Union Turnpike = ArwinLLC = Glenwood Mgmt.

4)We also have 4 entries at that 1200 Union Turnpike address on Maureen O'Connell's (non 24 hour) NYS campaign filing as circled on this thumbnail image (click to enlarge):

and here are the 4 NYS Dept. of State business entity records from the database:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

5)So we definitely know that Litwin = 1200 Union Turnpike = Arwin LLC = Glenwood Mgmt. = East 46th Realty LLC

6)The bottom line: Litwin made at least two $8500 contributions to O'Connell as Arwin Realty and E. 46th Realty (in addition to some hefty contributions to the Senate PAC which I think are allowed given the Bloomberg contribution).  So the question is does this $17,000 contribution violate our campaign finance laws in NYS? Or is the registering of one company in Delaware getting around that? But can foreign companies even contribute? Interesting, huh?

The simplest way to stop this abuse of the system is to go to a Clean Money Clean Election system.

Publicly financed elections are the future.

Governor Spitzer wants it.

Citizen Action of New York is working to make this happen.

Go to citizenactionny.org and help change the system from the bottom up.

CMCE... (0.00 / 0)
Spitzer has said he is for it...we've got to get it passed.

We've got some work ahead of us.

Interesting Development in O'Connell's Financing (0.00 / 0)
Good to see this being reviewed. I really wonder (note sarcasm) what WellCare is doing here. But again, playing the position that nobody gets a free pass it was interesting to note that the Soros clan (George, Jonathan and Robert) each gave $8,500 apiece to Johnson. Isn't $8,500 the limit per individual in a senate campaign (please correct me if I am wrong)? Sort of reminds me what happenned in the Albany County DA race a few years back.

Like WellCare, you think they were trying to circumvent campaign laws? Of course not (again, note sarcasm)!!!

AM - I though someone who is a regular front page blogger here was going to post Johnson's contributions so we can get into that too.

I haven't had the time (0.00 / 0)
So, go for it. I did browse it quickly, but didn't notice lots of half a million dollar transfers between PACs and Campaign Committees, max contributions from multiple companies with the same addresses on the same dates, huge $ transfers from PARTY LEADERS who are under FBI INVESTIGATIONS ... y'know, things that might seem a bit more interesting.

here's an idea: (0.00 / 0)

The Point of this Race is.... (0.00 / 0)
CLEAN MONEY, CLEAN ELECTIONS.

The present process is serving no one. I know. I've raised money, although not in these amounts, and, I have to say, time spent making calls and collecting donations is time that is not spent talking to voters about ideas and policy.

We've got some work ahead of us.

It's called whoring (0.00 / 0)
Plain and simple. Our legislators and candidates are forced by the present system to whore themselves. Main difference is, we the people ultimately get stuck with the bill.
