NY-21: Brooks Out With Second Mailer, Third Radio Ad

by: robert.harding

Fri Aug 01, 2008 at 13:10:07 PM EDT

Tracey Brooks has come out with her second mailer being sent to residents in the 21st congressional district and her third radio ad that is airing on AM and FM stations throughout the 21st.

The mailer has a theme of "We will" featuring women and mentions of issues like health care and choice. This is what the mailer looks like being sent to voters in NY-21:

Brooks also came out with a radio ad entitled For All focusing on health care.

"Under George Bush the number of Americans without health insurance has climbed to an unacceptable 47 million," said Brooks. "It's time to make government accountable to the people again and take on the Republicans and special interests in Washington ."

In the ad Brooks says: "47 million Americans don't have health insurance.  The rest of us are paying too much for it.  I'm Tracey Brooks.  In Congress, I'll take on the insurance and drug companies and fight for guaranteed health care for all."

There is no question that Brooks is really utilizing the media in her campaign, both traditional sources and online sources, to promote her candidacy.

Someone should tell Brooks... (4.00 / 1)
That George Bush won't be President, and neither will John McCain.t saying "I'll stand with Barack Obama" and end the corruption of the political system in D.C.

Where's the substance here?  What does "Offer health care for all" even mean?

I get a kick out of the whole message that Brooks will stand up to Republicans and special interests:

1.) She was a Republican for most of her life and just became a democrat in 2004.
2.) She worked for Albany;s biggest Republican lobbyist, Jimmy Feathers, who personally maxed out to her campaign.
3.) She has lobbyists running her campaign, a big chunk of her local money is from the lobbying world.
4.) She ran for the Assembly as an "independent" not a progressive
5.) She is part of that world of special favors and insider access. She currently is on the payroll of an Albany lobbyist firm!!

There are better progressive in the race -- Tonko, Steck, Shahinfar, and of those three, two are Better Democrats - Steck and Shahinfar.

Sloppy Seconds (0.00 / 0)
The second mailer from the Brooks campaign lacks the all-important disclaimer...who paid for and authorized this piece?  This is just sloppy work, especially for a campaign that is touts its professionalism and organization and has the assistance of groups like Emily's List.

such hypocrites (0.00 / 0)
I am continually amazed at the level of hypocrisy shown by the supporters of some of the other candidates in this race. In response to the comments made by JQA and Jawbreaker, I believe the old phrase that goes with this is "the pot calling the kettle black." You guys need to get your facts straight before you go making outlandish claims. Brooks is a Democrat and a progressive, read her website, actually learn about her positions. She's been endorsed by WAND, Emily's List, NOW, etc. If she was a republican or not a progressive, I highly doubt these organizations would endorse her. Not only that, but in 2002 when she ran for assembly she was endorsed by Albany County Democratic Party. Furthermore, you continually say she's a lobbyist blah blah blah, again, LOOK AT THE FACTS. She has NEVER been a registered lobbyist. She is a lawyer working for law firms that happen to have lobbying practices like MOST Albany law firms.

Steck on the other hand, is a party insider and chairman, part of the back room good ol' boys network.  He's had a mediocre record in the county legislature and is also a "limousine liberal" of Albany Academy, Harvard and Loudonville. He wouldn't know anything about Hamilton Hill or Arbor Hill or Fulton County for that matter. Darius really was a Republican until recently. And Paul Tonko has been a party-insider politician living on the public dime for over 30 years!

As for the second comment...sloppy and what not? Kind of like Phil Steck signs without disclaimers and illegally placed or Paul Tonko's first website a copy of another candidates or his current low-tech website with misinformation saying he had the Albany County endorsement...or Phil Steck's wife leaving notes at people's doors on Albany County Legislature stationary...everyone makes mistakes...

Hitting a nerve? (0.00 / 0)
You don't get more ol' boys network than Jerry Jennings. Jerry Jennings runs a thugocracy in Albany and he has shut out the people from having a voice.  The worst move of her campaign was to embrace him and his dirty tricks mentality.

When did Tracey enroll as a Democrat? Why did she run for the Assembly as an independent? Are lobbyists running her campaign on Columbia Street? What is her day-to-day job with the Albany lobbying firm? What cases is she currently working on? Who are the firm's clients? Who did she represent when whe worked for Jimmy Feathers when she was a registered Republican?

Has Tracey been living off the public dime?  What do you mean Darius was a Republican??

Huh? (0.00 / 0)
This is the second estrogen-laced mailer from Tracey. What about the rest of us? Are men allowed to vote in this primary, too?

You'd never know it from the thrust of her arguments. Maybe she's blowing off the Y chromosome crowd.

Got to admit (4.00 / 1)
that it hits home a bit for me.

Maybe it shouldn't, but the truth is that while I proudly voted for Obama, part of me felt a little disloyal to my gender.  Maybe the polling shows that other women feel likewise. Could make the difference with so many candidates running.

Don't feel too bad, Oliver. Women have felt ignored in politics for a long time!

I agree (0.00 / 0)
We need more diversity in Congress. The problem with Tracey is that she is not a progressive, and she embraces machine thugs like Jerry Jennings.

I do believe we should be electing Better Democrats rather than choosing someone because of gender.  Look at the current House and their failures to do the right thing time and time again.

We can't be sending a go along to get along representative. Unfortunately for her, Brooks would be just that. She;s says all the right things on this blog, but her actions (Jennings, cybersquatting) speak louder than her words.

Thin female bench (0.00 / 0)
NYS has the usual situation re: females.  That is, most of the voters are women, many-to-most of the party regulars who do the grunt work in campaigns are women, and most of the elected and appointed officials are men.  As soon as you get much pay or stature/respect for the work, it becomes a guy-job.  Not a lot of rules to prevent discrimination in "hiring" in the political sphere, so, it is a worse situation than the private sector, where we have recourse to the courts to help level the playing field. Part of the reason that Brooks is using this strategy is, doubtless, that it has resonance for a goodly chunk of voters.

Progressives ought to think about developing a more diverse bench of contenders, because, as I have said before, representation does matter, and voters will be effected by the opportunity, when presented.
