NY-26: When Ready, It's Time To Rally Behind Alice Kryzan

by: robert.harding

Sat Sep 13, 2008 at 14:13:32 PM EDT

I have been a Jon Powers supporter. I will always be a supporter of Jon's and a friend of Jon's. He has left a mark on this district that many of us will remember. I really hope he bounces back better than ever and serves his community, this region and the people of this area. Powers has a bright future and as I have told him many times, wherever he goes, I'll be sure to be right there fighting for him.

In the 26th congressional district, we do have a Democratic nominee. That nominee is Alice Kryzan. She is a strong progressive who supports a green energy economy for Western New York and wants every American to have health insurance coverage. She wants to bring our troops home from Iraq safely and securely while bringing accountability and ethics to Washington D.C.

For those Democrats who might be upset that Powers or Jack Davis didn't win, let's look at the other option: Chris Lee. In today's Buffalo News, Lee gave us a lot of fodder. He said he supports the Bush tax cuts, which doesn't surprise us as Lee is a millionaire and has received the tax breaks while the rest of Western New York's middle class has picked up the slack for him. He also said that while he supports a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, he believes the timetable should be made by the military and not the politicians (even though it is the politicians who will need to set such a timetable). Lee also supports the same free trade practices that have hurt Western New York and shipped many of our jobs out of state or out of the country.

So, as a Democrat, you have to ask yourself: Do you want two more years of Republican representation that has done nothing for NY-26? Do you want another representative in the mold of (and endorsed by) Tom Reynolds? If not, the only option is to vote for Alice Kryzan. If you want to continue the abysmal Republican leadership here in NY-26, you will vote for Chris Lee. It's that simple.

Believe me, it will take time for a lot of us who supported Jon Powers to come around. I can tell you that if Jack Davis won, many of us (including myself) would not rally behind him. There are things Kryzan will need to overcome, but when considering our options, she is the best option. She is progressive, she is a Democrat and she won't go to Washington and further a Republican agenda. Instead, she will go to Washington D.C. and push a progressive and Democratic agenda for our area and for our country.

When ready, we need to rally behind Alice Kryzan and give her our votes in November. It will be tough after supporting Jon for 14 months. Some will join sooner or later. But if we allow Chris Lee to walk into this seat, we won't be doing ourselves any favors. Once this seat goes Republican, it will stay Republican. So we need to make sure we are voting with this in mind come November 4. We need to vote for the best candidate. That candidate is Alice Kryzan.

Amen.

Cheers for being a team player, buddy (0.00 / 0)

Where are the specifics? (0.00 / 0)
I see nothing on Kryzan's website that indicates her tax views.  Is she for tax cuts?  Isn't she too a millionaire?  The logic that Lee is a millionaire so he of course must be for Bush's tax cuts could also be applied to Kryzan if she is also a millionaire.  She talked about her success at the SUNY Geneseo debate so I think she is quite wealthy herself.  A way to fend off that attack would be if she had some specific tax policy on her website.  I couldn't find anything under "Jobs & The Economy."

Also, when it comes to the military, if Bush had listened to our military then Iraq wouldn't be the quagmire it is currently.  Kryzan could differentiate herself here by seeking the advice of the military rather than leaving it just to politicians.  We don't have enough veterans in Congress nowadays.  Prior to Vietnam we did and now we only have one Iraq War veteran in Congress, Patrick Murphy.  The military are our experts in times of war and I believe it is a good thing to listen to them rather than give them piecemeal what they need like Bush did.

I do like that Kryzan supports The Responsible Plan To End the War In Iraq (I interviewed one of its co-authors, Major General Paul Eaton), so that is a plus for her.

One thing that will hurt Kryzan is her assertion that she's a lifelong Democrat.  That statement alienates those who have not been and ostracizes any crossover voters.  If Kryzan wants to win, she has to appeal to more than just Democrats since the district is primarily Republican in registration.  It's not a smart strategy.  I was once a Republican before becoming a Democrat and I have to tell you, there is passion in the converted.  ;)

I was a very vocal and dedicated Jon Powers supporter and always will be.  Whatever Jon decides to pursue, I'll always have his back.  That being said, I would love to see this seat turn Democratic but it has to be earned, not anointed. You don't gain supporters through osmosis.

Chris Lee was out in the rural district tonight in Churchville with Jim Alesi.  The Republicans are playing for this and hard.

She doesn't need any Republican votes (0.00 / 0)
Just most of the Is and Bs.

[ Parent ]
But you and I know... (0.00 / 0)
That in this district, that is a reach. She does need Republican votes, like it or not. And yes, she needs Independents, Blanks and others to support her as well.

[ Parent ]
I don't know man (0.00 / 0)
Davis took most of the Is and Bs and Kryzan has 3 distinct advantages not enjoyed by Davis in 06
1) Female (women love to vote for women)
2) Presidential election year
3) District has shifted since 2006. Apr 06-Mar 07 shows 1000 less D's, but 8,000 less Rs and 4000 More B's and I's. And NY stopped re-registering people in October; gotta believe there's thousands more waiting to be processed. If the same %s by party hold from 06 we win by a little under 1%.

[ Parent ]
Yes, but... (0.00 / 0)
Davis and Kryzan are two different candidates. Davis is conservative. He's going to win support from the Ross Perot-type Independents because of free trade and jobs. Davis had the ability to win the conservative and moderate vote. Kryzan will have to show that she can win these votes.

That should go without saying.

Yes, women like to vote for women. But women also like to vote for a woman that matches their ideology and views. I don't think you will see a conservative woman voting for Kryzan. A majority of Democrats are women, so that helps Kryzan.

A presidential election year will increase turnout. That we do know. How that unfolds is another story. Are there enough Democrats in NY-26 excited by Obama to come out and vote for Kryzan? I have to imagine that SD-61 will help in Genesee and Erie counties if Joe Mesi plays his cards right and excites with a down ballot race. In the other counties though it will be tough.

There's no logic needed... (0.00 / 0)
Lee said himself he supports the Bush tax cuts (from the Buffalo News article above):

Already, Lee is distinguishing himself from Kryzan in many ways. He very much supports President Bush's tax cuts and does not want to see them expire.

"It would be the largest tax increase this country has ever faced; it would set this country into a downward spiral, and we're struggling already economically," he said. "I know [Kryzan] is in favor of letting those tax cuts expire. I want to make them permanent. I don't want to give the federal government more dollars to spend foolishly."

What I was saying is that because he's a millionaire he benefits from the Bush tax cuts. Of course he wouldn't want them cut. Jack Davis didn't want them cut either. They have a personal stake in it.

Also, the military can't decide when to come home or when to go to war. That isn't their decision. Yes, we can take their advice AND we need their advice. But we also need the right politicians in office who are the ones responsible for deciding when to come home that will make such a decision based on the guidance they receive from the military.

Kryzan does need to earn the support of us just like Jon did. I said that Wednesday and I will repeat that until it happens.

Ok... (0.00 / 0)
Again, I don't see why Kryzan is left off from your rationale on taxes: she too is a millionaire who has benefitted from Bush's tax cuts.  She too has a personal stake in it.  Now if she is opposed to continuing Bush's tax cuts it is not stated on her website that I could find: http://www.kryzanforcongress.c...

I agree with you on the military, but we have to have politicians who actually listen and make informed decisions rather than "gut feelings" like Bush and his version of Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch.  I give kudos to Kryzan for her support of The Responsible Plan but she needs to more deeply understand the military.  Her response at the SUNY Geneseo debate on military specifics was weak.  Maybe she should drive down to Brighton and meet with Major General Batiste.

Kryzan has to earn this.

Jerri... (0.00 / 0)
She is left off my rationale because she didn't tell The Buffalo News yesterday that she not only supports the Bush tax cuts but does not want to see them expire.

Lee said the following:

"It would be the largest tax increase this country has ever faced; it would set this country into a downward spiral, and we're struggling already economically," he said. "I know [Kryzan] is in favor of letting those tax cuts expire. I want to make them permanent. I don't want to give the federal government more dollars to spend foolishly."

It's one thing to say that you support the Bush tax cuts. It's another to say that, if you cut these tax cuts then it will lead to the largest tax increase this country has ever faced. I guess you could look at it that way. After all, if you tax millionaires, they have to pay more. So

You aren't going to find specifics on most candidate websites. Their websites aren't meant to be policy databases. Powers was criticized for this but what Powers did was have press events and releases that announced a policy, like trade with the UAW for example. I have said this in the past, but the candidate with the best website around is Eric Massa. If you want to know where Massa stands (with specifics) you can find a lot of issues there broken down for you.

My point with you on the military was virtually the same, so I see no point in debating that. I just laugh at the notion that some people think (not you) that the military is the one who took us to war and they can decide when they come home. It is up to Washington. We need the right leaders there to make that decision. Powers would have been one of those leaders.

I forgot to continue what I was going to say there. Lee is forwarding this notion of trickle down economics. Of course, it doesn't really trickle down. So his support of it is not only to protect his own interests, but also to protect the long-standing Republican economic policy of trickle down economics.

I agree. But I'm not sure that it makes a difference. (0.00 / 0)
To be blunt, speaking as somebody who's on the ground out here in the rural counties, I'm not optimistic about the odds on this race anymore.

For starters, the coverage of the upset victory is going to be the first time most people have heard of Alice Kryzan. There was a ton of press coverage built up around this race--that's all been reset to zero.

Second, if the Republican campaign consultants are even half-smart--not something I usually bet on, but sometimes it happens--the phrase "millionaire environmental lawyer" is going to be hammered in every media appearence from now until doomsday. It plays to the worst stereotypes and preconceptions, and closes off tons of voters out here the instant they hear it.

Lastly is the money. Kryzan has spent a lot of time actively slamming the netroots as "special interests," "outside the district," etc., so I doubt they're going to be breaking down her door to help her raise money. Unless she wants to spend out of her pocket to run this campaign, that's going to be a problem, because the other guy has a big wallet too.

I disagree (0.00 / 0)
They can't use the millionaire line when their own candidate is a millionaire. It would be counterproductive because then the Democrats can comeback with millionaire exporter of jobs. Pick your poison.

I would substitute "millionaire" with "liberal." They are probably going to hammer her on her progressive agenda. But the millionaire thing is something they can't really hit on with effectiveness.

There's no question that Kryzan's weakness (or one of her weaknesses) is fundraising. She's going to need big time help with that.

[ Parent ]
I agree with you but... (0.00 / 0)
you're the one who mentioned Lee's millionaire status, which is why I picked up on Kryzan's millionaire status.  I agree with you on the trickle down economic policy Lee seems to be supporting, which is disastrous.  We're really not disagreeing on much here, just semantics.

I also know we agree on the military angle.  Powers would have been a strong leader with a military background and I feel we need more of a true understanding in our Congressional leaders about what the military's needs and uses are and should be.  Kryzan could step out ahead on this.

Ads (attack ads against Powers) were what changed this race but Lee has a big coffer to combat any further negative ads Kryzan runs.  I was just watching Meet The Press and Senator Chuck Schumer said the DSCC has a 24-hour rule: answer all attacks within 24 hours and hit back hard.  It is a rule that should be the Democrats' mantra.

Kryzan will have to come up with a different game plan to win the general because her primary win was largely garnered by negative ads and a lack of a millionaire opponent who could answer with their own ad.  Chris Lee has already been on camera, with actual footage of him speaking to the voters, looking all Ken-doll-like and he has millions to spend.  Kryzan will have to contend with that somehow.  A strong grassroots and netroots effort seems to me to be a component she has to employ to overcome the district registration numbers plus Lee's money, lack of a bruising primary, and lack of a self-defined liberal ideology.

I maintain that Kryzan hurt herself by saying she's the only lifelong Democrat during the primary because that alienated those who have switched parties and any of them who would have been crossover voters.

Furthermore, Kryzan's environmental record is ripe for picking apart by the Republicans.  She used to work with prominent Niagara County Republicans (at Harris Beech I believe) so I know they know her work.  It is going to get interesting.

I mentioned Lee's millionaire status... (0.00 / 0)
As a reason for why he supports the Bush tax cuts. Jack Davis supports the Bush tax cuts too. Here in New York, we had millionaires and billionaires that opposed a millionaires tax. Gee, I wonder why...

Using Lee's millionaire status against him alone is not effective. But the point here is that Lee is a millionaire that supports the Bush tax cuts. Lee said himself that Kryzan is opposed to the Bush tax cuts, although I have not seen anything set in stone that shows such a position.

Lee also has the NRCC, which has already ran ads for him in the district. Schumer mentioned the 24-hour rule on The Daily Show awhile back. It's a rule to live by. The problem is that it's not everyone's policy. I really like the work Schumer has done with the DSCC. Schumer is someone we all should listen to on this topic.

I have always believed in responding to such negative ads with the facts and honesty. But that's just my personal belief.

[ Parent ]
I agree with you there! (0.00 / 0)
Definitely I believe in the 24-hour rule, always have.  You cannot let them control the message or define your message.  Democrats must learn to be indefatigable in defending themselves.

The high-road is desolate.  "Above the fray" is like Brigadoon, it only comes down for all to see about once every 100 years and no one's really sure it even exists.  Dems must live in the real world, where we have to defend the attacks quickly.
