Albany Times Union

Profitable newspaper wants to bust union

by: devtob

Mon Jun 01, 2009 at 11:23:17 AM EDT

Nationally, the newspaper business is in a depression, due mostly to the Great Recession's impact on advertising and partly to stupid decisions made by newspaper chains large and small.

But many newspapers are still profitable, if less so than before, on an operating basis, and some of them see the current crisis as an opportunity to screw their employees.

This diary will be about one such profitable newspaper -- the Albany Times Union, the major daily for the Capital District, owned by the billionaire Hearst family.

In early April, the TU unilaterally canceled its contract with the Newspaper Guild, which represents about 240 people in the newsroom, the sales staff, and elsewhere.

The Guild is fighting back, taking out ads and billboards encouraging people to cancel their TU subscriptions.

What this is all about, below.

A bloggy boycott of the anti-union Albany Times Union

by: devtob

Mon Apr 13, 2009 at 19:15:08 PM EDT

I've been a regular commenter on Capital Confidential, the political blog of the Albany Times Union, since it began about four years ago (no links, for reasons laid out below).

CapCon features posts by the TU's Capitol bureau journalists on what's happening on their beats and a daily aggregation of statewide political news, with comments by people like me underneath. It has been a lively place for partisan commenters -- during the Sweeney/Gillibrand contest in 2006, some posts attracted 100-plus comments.

It's a quieter place now, even though the current race in NY-20 has generated lots of comments, many by me.

That election has not yet been decided, but I'm not commenting at CapCon anymore, about Tedisco/Murphy or anything else, because last week the Hearst billionaires who own the TU unilaterally canceled their contract with the Newspaper Guild, which represents about 240 people in the newsroom, the sales staff, and elsewhere.

Details, below.

NY-20: Albany Times-Union Endorses Murphy

by: phillip anderson

Sun Mar 29, 2009 at 01:04:06 AM EDT

As endorsements in NY-20 go, this is a pretty good one.

Scott Murphy in the 20th

...We believe voters should support Democrat Scott Murphy.

At a time when this nation desperately needs politicians in Washington to work together, the Republican Party, searching for a new identity, is defining itself largely by what it is against, namely, Mr. Obama and his policies. Its leaders line up behind radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, who openly declares his hope that Mr. Obama's agenda fails.

Yes, disagreement is part of democracy. But they - and Mr. Murphy's opponent, Assemblyman James Tedisco - fail to offer an alternative vision, other than a mantra of tax cuts, that recognizes the complexity of the nation's issues. They put the triumph of partisan ideology ahead of the nation's economic security.

We watched with interest, for more than a month, as Mr. Tedisco failed to take a position on the federal stimulus bill until the AIG bonus scandal erupted. Mr. Tedisco says he was taking the time to read the bill. Perhaps. Or perhaps he was waiting to see which way the political winds were blowing, and for a good excuse to oppose a measure that Mr. Murphy rightly supported for the billions it put into the nation's aging infrastructure, education, health care, green energy and, yes, taxpayers' pockets.

The nation does not have time to dither and play games like this. Unfortunately, that is the kind of politics Mr. Tedisco knows all too well how to practice.

We appreciate Mr. Tedisco's years of service in the Assembly, and, as minority leader, his flair for getting media attention. As minority leaders go, he has filled the role better than most. But given the 26 years he has had to build a record, there are few significant accomplishments to point to, other than Buster's Law and his successful opposition to former Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. He does deserve credit, to be sure, for being one of many voices in favor of a cap on school property tax increases and the STAR school tax rebate program.

Mr. Murphy, admittedly, has no political experience. But he has shown his ability in this election to go toe-to-toe with a seasoned politician.

He is not like some other businessmen we have seen running for office on vague platitudes about operating government like a business, asking us to take it on faith that they'll eventually get up to speed in Washington. He is fluent on the issues. And we are confident that he would join a Democratic majority that would work with Mr. Obama on what voters in the 20th Congressional District elected him to achieve: a comprehensive economic recovery strategy that includes improving and spending wisely on education, health care, technology and energy.

We urge the voters of the 20th Congressional District to show their independence once again, and send Mr. Murphy to Washington.

"For crying out loud, stop trying to make my life miserable.''

by: phillip anderson

Tue Jan 09, 2007 at 14:27:08 PM EST

Joe "Brunogate" Bruno Does NOT Heart the Albany Times Union.

Bruno raises funds, raises voice

Sen. Joseph Bruno had his first fund-raiser for 2007 in Troy Monday night at Franklin Towers. Although he's attended several of Bruno's campaign donation events, particularly the golf outings, Bruno pal Jared Abbruzzese wasn't spotted at  this get-together.

...

On Tuesday morning he was blasting the Times Union for editorializing about his unwillingness to go along with Gov. Eliot Spitzer's call for an independent redistricting process.

"I wish they would wake up and not print garbage that relates to six years from today,'' Bruno said. "I'm not worried about six years from now.'' He said he'd prefer for the Times Union to get behind his tax cut program for small businesses instead. "For crying out loud, stop trying to make my life miserable."'

--emphasis mine

Too funny.

So, Just Who Is Jared Abbruzzese?

by: phillip anderson

Tue Jan 02, 2007 at 09:20:59 AM EST

The Albany Times Union has some answers, lots of 'em, actually. James M. Odato has a fantastic piece from this weekend that fills in many gaps in our knowledge of Bruno's BFF. It ain't pretty.

Bruno friend draws scrutiny from FBI

Senate majority leader, business associate have tangled relationship

But now Abbruzzese, 52, is being scrutinized in an FBI probe that has found he paid Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, R-Brunswick, hundreds of thousands of dollars in consulting fees. Interviews and a review of court documents reveal that his business dealings have included accusations of fraud and deceit, and even a multimillion-dollar judgment that threatened to take his home until that ruling was reversed.

In recent years the entrepreneur has been dogged by complaints of deceiving stockholders and fleecing investors. None of those complaints has ever been sustained in court.

...

Flashy and outspoken, the businessman is described by associates as a "close friend" and business associate of Bruno, the state's most powerful Republican politician. But beyond friendship, their relationship is a tangled web of public money and private enterprise that has now drawn the attention of law enforcement.
