NY-26: Republicans Recycling Old Attacks On Kryzan

by: robert.harding

Tue Oct 21, 2008 at 23:17:08 PM EDT

Last November, I started it. When inquiring about who Alice Kryzan was, I mentioned Kryzan's link to Love Canal long ago. Even The Buffalo News acknowledged the fact that Kryzan had been subject to "attacks" from me on the Love Canal issue. While I didn't think they were "attacks," I agree that I was asking those questions long before anyone in the media or in the Republican Party did.

The reason I bring this up is because the Republicans have an ad out hitting Kryzan on Love Canal. The Republicans are clearly desperate since Kryzan provided an answer about her role in representing Hooker Chemical, the company responsible for the pollution at Love Canal.

I don't want to toot my own horn here. But the Republicans are late to the party. Kryzan's answer to that question about Love Canal, as captured by the Buffalo News, was the following:

Negotiating a settlement on behalf of Occidental, "I learned a lot," Kryzan said. "I learned how to listen. It was my first experience dealing with a difficult problem in a highly charged environment."

Kryzan's answer was a respectable one and one that answered the question for me. All I wanted to know was why. Why would she defend a company that caused such great destruction and then tout herself later in her life as an environmental attorney? I felt that her answer was satisfactory. It was an answer to an important question.

The Republicans now want to recycle this attack. Any other time, the Republicans hate recycling. But if they can score cheap political points, it's good enough for them.

I compare this to the Republicans bringing up Bill Ayers again. Barack Obama answered all the necessary questions about Ayers during the primaries when he was questioned by Sen. Hillary Clinton. It should have been a dead issue - even for the Republicans. The same goes for the Love Canal-Kryzan link. Kryzan has answered the questions about that. It should be a dead issue.

As the person who raised these issues last year, the Republicans really need to find something new and original. Love Canal is mine. The questions about it were answered. The issue is done.

Period.

NY-26: Democrat And Chronicle Endorses Alice Kryzan

by: robert.harding

Sun Oct 19, 2008 at 16:39:38 PM EDT

Even though the Democrat and Chronicle endorsed Randy Kuhl over Eric Massa today, they did get one thing right: They endorsed Alice Kryzan for the 26th congressional district seat.

Democrat Alice Kryzan is an environmental attorney who believes she can defy the odds in the Republican-dominated 26th Congressional District and help make life better in this region.

So do we. The Democrat and Chronicle endorses Kryzan in the Nov. 4 general election.

She is opposed by Republican Chris Lee, who also is making his first foray into politics. However, Lee, the owner of a successful family business that operates internationally, failed to provide a strong enough argument that he'd be the best successor to retiring Republican Rep. Tom Reynolds.

Kryzan not only persuaded us she has good ideas worth trying, but that she possesses the kind of personal decorum that seems to be in short supply in the public arena. She took the high road in the mudslinging Democratic primary campaign and was rewarded by voters with victory.

There is one part of the endorsement that I found peculiar though.

However, Lee's criticism of Kryzan's lack of familiarity with proposed Renaissance Square, the largest capital project in this region's history, was valid. The project, after all, in some form could represent a major boost to the revitalization of downtown.

Ren Square is in downtown Rochester. The 26th doesn't go that far into Monroe County. Ren Square has an impact on Monroe County, but that's another district's issue. There are issues in the district that need to be talked about. We don't need to talk about something here that is really out of our control.

Otherwise, this was a great endorsement of Kryzan. The D & C spoke highly of her and you could tell that they liked her. She is very smart and she has put her heart into this. So anytime that is recognized, it has to make her and her campaign happy.

NY-26: Jon Powers Endorses Alice Kryzan

by: robert.harding

Fri Oct 17, 2008 at 14:10:55 PM EDT

Contrary to popular belief, I never thought it was necessary that Jon Powers endorse Alice Kryzan. But Jon, after serious thought and meditation, has come out in a big way for Alice today.

Jon has sent an e-mail to supporters endorsing Alice and asking them to do whatever they can to help Alice as she takes on Republican Chris Lee in a tough fight here in NY-26.

Here is the first part of the e-mail:

Friends,

Over the last 18 months, together, we have worked to call attention to the many challenges Western New Yorkers face. I listened to families struggling because of our weakened economy, soldiers fighting in a war without the necessary equipment and returning without health care they have earned -- there is no question that our country is hurting because of Washington's failed leadership. With just 18 days until Election Day, I write to urge you to vote for change. We have a chance to elect a new Member of Congress to represent the working men and women of Western New York and I hope you will join me in supporting Alice Kryzan for Congress.

Families in Western New York have a clear choice. As our youth are moving out of state to find jobs, do we want a representative who will continue to send our jobs overseas? Or do we want someone who will fight to grow good paying Green-collar and Green-tech jobs that will move Western New York into the 21st Century.

The rest of the e-mail is below the fold.

We have 18 days until Election Day. Let's help Alice Kryzan any way we can. Whether it's going door to door, phone banking or writing letters to the editor, let's help make sure NY-26 turns blue on November 4.

NY-26: Powers Move Out-Of-State Confirmed; WFP Line Open For Kryzan

by: robert.harding

Wed Oct 08, 2008 at 18:01:58 PM EDT

Jill Terreri of the Democrat and Chronicle is reporting today that Jon Powers has notified the New York State Board of Elections of his move out of New York, which allows Alice Kryzan the chance to have a second line on November's ballot.

I had the chance to speak to Powers today. He is doing well and confirmed to me that he has moved out of state. He did say that he would be sending out an e-mail in the next day or two to talk a little more about what his future plans hold, so I will let him break the news in the coming days.

What I can say is that Jon is doing well. He is going to be doing something that keeps him involved with two things he knows plenty about: Politics and veterans' issues.

That said, I find it very intriguing that he is still drawing media attention and there have been numerous calls for him to endorse Kryzan in order to save his political career. There have been jabs leveled at Powers over the last month for his silence and for disappearing.

While I like Jon and I'm a friend of Jon's, I don't see how this attention does us any good in the 26th congressional district. We are supposed to be talking about Alice Kryzan. She was the victor on Primary Night and she is the Democratic candidate now.

Many people, including some friends of mine in the blogosphere, have called for Jon to endorse Alice. Why? So we can some sort of Barack Obama/Hillary Clinton-like moment? I don't think we need that. Powers proved that endorsements don't matter much. The only endorsements that matter are on Election Day. I would rather see Kryzan and the Democrats in NY-26 working on getting those endorsements (votes) rather than waiting to see what Powers is going to do.

One last note: It is easy for people who have never campaigned and ran for office to say he should just come out and endorse Kryzan. I had a friend who ran for a local office (his campaign lasted four months) and he was shocked and drained at the end when he lost. Whenever we would talk, that's all he would talk about. He did this for over a month.

Powers ran a campaign for 15 months. He said at one point that it was his "full-time job." He poured his heart and soul into it. Was he tired at the end? You bet. Was he drained? Definitely. Did he need a break? No doubt about it.

We need to realize that the longer our campaign seasons are, the longer we need to recover from them. Tony Blair was on "The Daily Show" recently and made a couple of jokes about how long our campaigns are. When you put all that energy into it, you're not going to just wake up on September 10 or November 5 and be ready to move on and endorse someone. It takes time.

NY-26: Interview With Alice Kryzan

by: robert.harding

Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 10:40:48 AM EDT

Some think Alice Kryzan came out of nowhere when she won the Democratic primary on Sept. 9. Since her win on Primary Day, Kryzan has been moving full speed ahead to November 4, when voters in the 26th congressional district will pick from Kryzan and Republican Chris Lee.

A day after her primary victory, Kryzan was named to the DCCC's Red To Blue program and endorsed by EMILY's List. It also didn't take long for her to be attacked by Lee's campaign, who has repeatedly said in attack ads that Kryzan will raise taxes and make sure they reinforce the fact that she is a liberal.

(Image courtesy of Kryzan for Congress)

Kryzan has been a lawyer for the last 35 years, although she did say that she was semi-retired. She is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School where, according to her bio on her campaign website, she was one of only 20 women in her graduating class. Kryzan got her start with Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a group that represented those who were arrested during civil rights protests. Since then, she has worked with a number of Buffalo-area law firms when she moved to the area 30 years ago and even started her own firm at one point.

Serving in the community has also been very important to Kryzan. She has worked with the Women's TAP Fund, Western New York Women's Fund, Planned Parenthood, among other community groups. Kryzan has also been an advocate for New York State parks and trails, where she helped organize a bike ride along the canal.

Kryzan does have Democratic politics in her blood. Her father Frank was mayor of Youngstown, Ohio in the mid-1950s. She does not leave out the fact that she is a lifelong Democrat and has helped support Democratic candidates throughout her life.

The rest of my interview with Kryzan is below the fold.

NY-26: Kryzan likely to get WFP line

by: Exile on Ericsson St.

Mon Oct 06, 2008 at 13:12:26 PM EDT

From the Buffalo News:

Efforts are under way to make Democrat Alice J. Kryzan the new candidate of the Working Families Party in the 26th Congressional District, giving her another line on the ballot in her campaign against Republican Christopher J. Lee.

James A. Duncan, chairman of the Erie County Working Families Party, said today he expects Kryzan to take over the line because previous candidate Jon Powers has moved out of state. While the State Board of Elections in Albany has not yet received notification from Powers, Duncan said he expects it to arrive soon.

"This certainly is an additional plus for Alice," he said. "We hope to have this wrapped up by the end of the day."

NY-26: SurveyUSA Poll Shows Lee Has Double-Digit Lead Over Kryzan

by: robert.harding

Fri Sep 26, 2008 at 13:37:06 PM EDT

A poll conducted for WGRZ-Channel 2 in Buffalo shows that Republican Chris Lee has a double-digit lead over Democratic candidate Alice Kryzan.

The poll includes the responses of 609 likely voters. Lee came in at 48 percent - 11 points higher than Kryzan, who currently sits at 37 percent.

This is how the poll breaks down, which also included Jon Powers, who is still on the Working Families Party line and Anthony Fumerelle, who was on the Independence Party line until the line was given to Lee when Fumerelle was nominated for a judgeship.

26th Congressional District Poll
CANDIDATE PERCENTAGE
Chris Lee (R)
48%
Alice Kryzan (D)
37%
Jon Powers (WF)
5%
Anthony Fumerelle (I)
3%
Undecided
7%
4.1% Margin of Error

There are some other notable facts from the poll:

- Lee wins among men (52 percent to 34 percent) while also winning among women (44 percent to 39 percent).

- Lee wins across all age demographics, including the 18 to 34 demographic, where he is beating Kryzan 58 percent to 29 percent. Kryzan performed best in the 50 to 64 demographic, receiving 40 percent of the vote in that section. However, the 18 to 34 demographic only made up 16 percent of all respondents, proving once again that these polls don't factor in enough of the youth vote because of cell phones, among other reasons.

- Lee is winning independents (47 percent to 32 percent) and if you factor in the independents who are supporting Fumerelle (eight percent) that lead grows.

- For those that think Powers would play a spoiler, it looks like all those assumptions are off. In fact, if the independents who were for Fumerelle all go to Lee, Lee's numbers increase to 51 percent - a 14 point difference between Lee and Kryzan.

This poll counters a DCCC-backed poll from earlier this week that showed Kryzan up ten points. I will take SurveyUSA's word over the DCCC poll. Kryzan being up ten in this district was a little weird to me, but made for a great news story and a great way to raise money for her anyway. Nevertheless, there is a lot of work to do in this district.

NY-26: Lee Gets Independence Party Line; IP Doesn't Contact Kryzan

by: robert.harding

Thu Sep 25, 2008 at 22:33:02 PM EDT

(H/T to Buffalo Pundit)

Republican Chris Lee has received the Independence Party line after Anthony Fumerelle, who was running as the Independence Party's candidate, was nominated to become a State Supreme Court judge in Queens.

The Independence Party today made Republican Christopher J. Lee its candidate in the 26th Congressional District.

The development is seen as a major coup for Lee, who now has the top two minor party lines along with the GOP slot.

The Independence Party was able to place Lee on the ballot under its line by exercising a series of technical moves.

Anthony L. Fumerelle previously had been the Independence Party's candidate, but is now nominated for a State Supreme Court judgeship in Queens even though Fumerelle is a Buffalo attorney.

The Independence Party backing Lee isn't breaking news. But what did they think of Alice Kryzan?

Connolly said the party did not contact Democrat Alice J. Kryzan, feeling more comfortable with the former businessman from Amherst.

Yes, you are reading that correctly. The Independence Party backed the Republican in the race without even talking to Alice Kryzan. No one said politics was fair, but you could at least extend an invitation to her so that your members could hear her talk.

Unlike my friend Buffalo Pundit, I like fusion voting. But like anything else, fusion voting has its flaws. Compare and contrast the Independence Party with the Working Families Party. I never hear about the great ground game that the Independence Party is putting out to support its candidates. That is the type of praise reserved for the WFP.

But here is one solution to this problem. Let's get rid of this part of the law that allows candidates to be nominated for judgeships to free up seats for another candidate. Only in the event of a candidate's death should that line open up. Using judgeships as a political tool not only gives minor parties a bad name, but it also cheapens the judicial system and makes it some sort of junkyard for candidates who were used to save the line for someone else.

I'm not ready to throw fusion voting under the bus because of more shady shenanigans from the Independence Party. But the system does need changing and the ways of the Independence Party prove that.

NY-26: If You Don't Have Sources, Make Up Your Own

by: robert.harding

Wed Sep 24, 2008 at 15:17:26 PM EDT

Republican Chris Lee has come out with a new ad targeting Democratic nominee Alice Kryzan. Here is the ad:

You will notice the ad cites this WebMemo from the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank that certainly is no friend to the Democrats. Apparently Chris Lee's campaign has decided that because Kryzan is a Democrat, they can associate her with this WebMemo from the Heritage Foundation. Not once is Kryzan's name mentioned, but when you provided a source for something like that in an ad, people are going to think that it's true.

We have known for some time that the Republicans would call Kryzan a "liberal trial attorney" or "liberal trial lawyer." That is how this ad opens. I guess that means we can call Chris Lee a "conservative millionaire free trader." But that would be childish.

NY-26: Kryzan Leads By 10 In New Poll

by: robert.harding

Tue Sep 23, 2008 at 14:51:57 PM EDT

(H/T to Swing State Project)

In a recent poll conducted in the 26th congressional district, Democratic nominee Alice Kryzan beats out Republican Chris Lee by 10 points - 39 percent to 29 percent - with 32 percent undecided.

Swing State Project posted the polling memo. Here is an excerpt from that:

While neither candidate is currently well-known district-wide, Kryzan's history and basic messages of standing up for the middle class and making the government work for them have a ready audience in this blue collar district, particularly with working women and Independent voters. She begins this contest with favorable to unfavorable ratio of over four-to-one.

Moreover, Republican Chris Lee has some serious negatives around trade issues, Iraq, and his failure to stand up for the middle class that make him a tough sell this year given the heightened economic angst of these western New York voters. Before these issues are even brought up with voters, Lee is viewed favorably by only 19 percent of voters--while 11 percent view him unfavorably. Once voters hear more about Lee's record on central pocketbook issues impacting the district's  middle class, he quickly loses all but the most partisan Republican support, and Independent voters are greatly troubled about supporting him as well.

This is big news. Now, there are still 32 percent undecided, but having a 10 point head-start to get those undecideds come your way is huge. I usually take these polls with a grain of salt, but this will garner huge press I'm sure.

I should have some video and a write-up on Kryzan tonight after my interview with her.

UPDATE: Isn't it interesting that when given a choice between two candidates that know very little about, they picked the Democrat? That to me shows what kind of environment we are in, even here in one of the reddest parts of New York.

NY-26, SD-59: Kryzan Wants More Accountablility For Markets; Questions For Kryzan, Konst?

by: robert.harding

Mon Sep 22, 2008 at 15:23:21 PM EDT

I ran into some traffic problems today so I couldn't make it for my interview with Kathy Konst. I have rescheduled the interview for tomorrow. So if you have any questions, please send them along to robert.harding22@gmail.com or you can leave them in the comments section.

Also, I will be sitting down with Alice Kryzan tomorrow. My goal is to give Alice this platform to discuss key issues so we can get to know more about her candidacy. Again, you can e-mail me your questions or leave them in the comments.

Kryzan has come out today with a critique of the current financial crisis as well as her call for politicians to put the needs of Americans first.

As she has from the beginning of her campaign, Alice Kryzan, Democratic Congressional Candidate for NY-26, decried this 'same old same old politic', calling for political leaders to start putting the people's interests first;

"We don't need oil lobbyists writing our energy policy, insurance companies making our medical decisions, or financial institutions taking huge risks and then asking Americans to foot the bill. We can't have two more years of these failed Bush policies, two more years of fewer jobs, stagnated wages and work sent overseas. We need someone ready to help us realize our future, not cling to the knee-jerk deregulation rhetoric of the past."

Alice called on Congress to act quickly to stabilize the market in order to ensure hardworking Americans don't lose their homes or other assets. But she also insisted that any legislation include accountability measures to improve financial regulation and ensure this disaster is not repeated. Furthermore, taxpayers should receive their fair share of any profits these companies make after being bailed out, CEO compensation should be limited, and Congress should give homeowners the assistance they need to protect their homes. And, of course, any efforts to stabilize the market should have independent oversight to ensure the job is done right.

Alice expressed disappointment that so many politicians refuse to grapple with the serious issues facing our country;

"People are tired of candidates who only offer platitudes and quick fixes. Whether it's offshore drilling that increases oil companies' profits without lowering gas prices or writing a blank check to the financial market to protect CEO's record salaries, the public has had enough. We need people with real solutions who we can trust to go to Washington and get results."

While Alice calls for commonsense measures to address our financial problems, Bush Republican Chris Lee says we need more of the same deregulation that increases corporate profits at the expense of hardworking Americans. In fact, Lee has made deregulation the centerpiece of his campaign, one of the only issues on which he has taken a clear stand.

It would be nice to have a real solution to the problem with our markets and real solutions to the problems average Americans are facing. Banks don't need bailouts. The American people need bailouts.

NY-26: DCCC Hits Lee On NAFTA, Jobs To China

by: robert.harding

Mon Sep 22, 2008 at 14:05:25 PM EDT

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has come out with an ad targeting Republican Chris Lee on NAFTA (Lee has said he supports free trade) and a fact off of Lee's website - which no longer is on Lee's website - that stated Lee's company was currently operating out of China.

This is a strong ad and I'm glad that the DCCC came out early with an ad in this district. People need to hear the truth about Chris Lee and his company. There is a reason why Lee supports free trade. Lee himself was a free trader. So he can't really oppose free trade without looking like a hypocrite.

NY-26: What Are Kryzan's Chances

by: robert.harding

Sun Sep 21, 2008 at 11:26:31 AM EDT

(Cross posted at Daily Kos)

It has been nearly two weeks since Alice Kryzan pulled off the upset and won the Democratic primary here in New York's 26th congressional district. Since Sept. 9, Kryzan has been named to the DCCC's Red To Blue program and received an endorsement from EMILY's List, which will be key backing for her.

However, endorsements are endorsements. The only endorsement that matters is the one from voters on Election Day. So what are Kryzan's chances?

There is plenty of upside and some downside to Kryzan. Blogs have been speculating about how well she will do and as a blogger from the 26th district (you can read my work over at The Albany Project), I have seen how Kryzan has been received in this district. Here are the strengths and weaknesses of Alice Kryzan:

STRENGTHS
- Kryzan is largely unscathed. The only two negatives against Kryzan were her involvement as legal representation for the Love Canal polluters and her $250 contribution to Republican Rep. Tom Reynolds - the man she, at first, was running to replace. I pushed both these issues on TAP and they were mentioned in the media. However, they never really stuck. One reason for that was Kryzan was never considered a very serious threat or she was not treated as a very serious threat. Other than those two issues, I found nothing.

- An intelligent, progressive woman. Kryzan is well educated (a University of Chicago Law School graduate) and her background is an impressive one. She has signed on and supports the Responsible Plan. She was also backed by New York's League of Conservation Voters. She is a proven progressive who has proven to be incredibly smart and brilliant on key issues to our cause. She supports a green economy while also supporting health care for all Americans. As mentioned before, Kryzan has signed on to the Responsible Plan, which stands as her plan for bringing our troops home from Iraq. She will also make environmental issues a priority when she goes to Washington D.C. - a direct contrast to the representative and his approach to the environment we have now. She is a progressive. There is no doubt about it.

- Strong support in larger counties. I contend that there are three different parts to this district (I will explain more later): The first part is Erie and Niagara counties. The second part are the rural counties. The final part is Monroe County. The three largest counties - Erie, Monroe and Niagara - were all won by Kryzan in the Democratic primary. Her biggest win came in Erie, where she won with 48 percent of the vote. If a Democrat is going to win this district, you need to win Erie and Niagara counties. Kryzan proved she can do that. She also proved that has some sort of base in Monroe County.

WEAKNESSES
- Fundraising. Maybe the aforementioned backing from DCCC and EMILY's List will help Kryzan in this category. Kryzan's bankroll shows that she has raised $281,298 and loaned her campaign $157,000. Keep in mind that she has been raising money since September 2007. That makes her primary victory even more surprising, considering her two opponents were both well-funded. She will need to change this. She needs to raise money and raise money well. In about six weeks she will be taking another well funded challenger: Republican Chris Lee, who is also a millionaire.

- Rural counties. Jon Powers won all four rural counties with over 700 votes. Powers' biggest win came in Livingston County - arguably the most distant county in NY-26 - where he received 939 votes to Kryzan's 446. Powers had support all across the rural counties and he paid attention and listened to the issues that were important to us. We have yet to see that from Kryzan, although she is making the effort. She has been reaching out to the rural counties in recent days to earn their support. Are Democrats going to win the rural counties? Probably not. But if you ignore them, it could be the difference between a narrow victory or a narrow defeat.

- Party unity. Unlike the primary fight between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, there aren't months in between the primary and general elections. There are only six weeks to go. Kryzan won 42 percent of the vote district-wide. That means in eight weeks (from the primary to the general) Kryzan has to rally the troops around her. She can do it, but it will take effort. So far, she has done all the right things. The only thing she lacks is time.

What does Kryzan need to do to win? First, she needs to win Erie and Niagara counties. Those are the most Democratic counties in the district (Niagara has a slight Democratic enrollment advantage while Erie has a slight Republican enrollment advantage, but won't be hard to go blue in November). Her margin of victory in Erie and Niagara counties will set the tone for how well she needs to do in the other five counties.

Then comes the rural counties. Kryzan won't win these four. If I was idealistic, I might say she could win a few of them. But in reality, Kryzan won't win any of them. However, she needs to minimize her loses in those four counties (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming). She needs to perform better than Democrats have in the past. She needs to get between 42 percent and 46 percent of the vote in those four counties. It's a reach, but it can be done. With hard work, a true grassroots effort and plenty of outreach you can do well in those four counties.

Lastly, Monroe County. In 2006, Jack Davis lost by over 6,000 votes in Monroe County. He lost the race by 7,000 votes. Davis did not campaign hard in Monroe County (or the rural counties) and paid for it on Election Day. If he focused on the other five counties, he would be our representative. However, he failed to do that and paid the price in 2006. Kryzan needs to avoid that same disaster. She has laid the ground work for success in Erie and Niagara counties. Now she needs to improve in the rural counties and build off her narrow victory in Monroe County. In a year when Monroe County is a battleground (there are two key state senate races that have towns inside NY-26) Kryzan can really use those local races to her advantage.

Can Kryzan do it? It's possible. It will be tough, but it is doable. There is a lot of work to do over the next six weeks. Right now, I would say Kryzan is an underdog. Remember, she was an underdog before. Nothing says she won't be able to pull it off again.

NY-26: Conservative Blogger On Kryzan: "Sloppy Seconds Kryzan"

by: robert.harding

Wed Sep 17, 2008 at 10:06:01 AM EDT

Buffalo Pundit caught this from The Buffalo Bean, who when writing about the NY-26 race referred to Democratic nominee Alice Kryzan. In fact, this is the exact line:

So, now they have to settle for Sloppy Seconds Alice Kryzan... and from the looks of things, the enthusiasm they had for the substitute teacher was far greater than they have for the trial lawyer.

Referring to an accomplished woman who, putting all aside, won the Democratic primary last Tuesday and who has a long history as a lawyer in this area as "sloppy seconds" is the low of all lows. It not only screams of sexism, but it is also insulting and uncalled for. In light of all the heat with Sarah Palin and how accusations of sexism have been tossed around because we dare ask her questions about her experience, you would think the born-again feminist movement within the Republican Party would think twice about using sexist language in attacks on Democratic women. But they have no other choice but to revert to their old method of thinking.

Yes, the netroots did support Jon Powers. A lot of us got to know Jon and supported his candidacy because of it. And yes, it will take time for members of the netroots to come around and vote for Kryzan. But calling her "sloppy seconds" is beyond shameful.

Also, this same blogger claims that our only argument against Republican Chris Lee is that he is a Republican and will resemble George W. Bush. Actually, Chris Lee made millions off of a family business that was shipped overseas. He says himself that he supports free trade. I can see why.

In his TV ads, Lee says he wants to get government out of the way so small businesses can create jobs. That's not a good idea given our current economic state. We need a balance. We need government to act as a regulator while businesses create jobs and profits.

I could go on. I'm glad to hear though that Chris Lee is pro-choice, although his Republican buddies and the folks that gave him the Conservative Party line might take issue with that. But hey, it's not my candidate and not my party!

But back to the original point here. We all know what "sloppy seconds" means. Its meaning isn't really a family friendly one. This is the kind of language that is uncalled for in our public discourse. Especially when the candidate you are targeting is a woman. It is derogatory, sexist and it crosses a line.

NY-26: Required viewing for Alice Kryzan

by: Jerri S. Kaiser

Sun Sep 14, 2008 at 15:27:40 PM EDT

I consider this an open letter to Alice Kryzan, the Democratic contender for NY-26.  It's Sunday so I'm going to make this brief: watch "Jerry Maguire."  If you've already seen it, watch it again.  All this week, after the blistering primary, this movie kept flashing into my mind for some reason.  It was not until I was watching "Meet The Press" today that I realized why.  Senator Chuck Schumer was on and they were discussing the presidential election and Hillary Clinton's support came up.  Barack Obama took the necessary steps to get Clinton's support and that of her supporters.  Obama earned that support.

In the end of "Jerry Maguire," the character played by Jay Mohr goes over to one of his numerous clients and hugs him because he watches Tom Cruise's character Jerry Maguire hug Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s character.  Maguire's hug was heartfelt because he had done the hard work to earn Gooding's character's (Tidwell) respect and admiration.  This is what Jon Powers did all over the district in NY-26, he earned it.  When Mohr's character just mimics the move without earning it, the recipient just pushes him away.

So, Alice, help us help you.

Lee was in Churchville last night.  If you don't know where Churchville is, well, you need to get familiar with the rural areas.

What is your mission statement, Alice?

Help us help you...

NY-26: When Ready, It's Time To Rally Behind Alice Kryzan

by: robert.harding

Sat Sep 13, 2008 at 14:13:32 PM EDT

I have been a Jon Powers supporter. I will always be a supporter of Jon's and a friend of Jon's. He has left a mark on this district that many of us will remember. I really hope he bounces back better than ever and serves his community, this region and the people of this area. Powers has a bright future and as I have told him many times, wherever he goes, I'll be sure to be right there fighting for him.

In the 26th congressional district, we do have a Democratic nominee. That nominee is Alice Kryzan. She is a strong progressive who supports a green energy economy for Western New York and wants every American to have health insurance coverage. She wants to bring our troops home from Iraq safely and securely while bringing accountability and ethics to Washington D.C.

For those Democrats who might be upset that Powers or Jack Davis didn't win, let's look at the other option: Chris Lee. In today's Buffalo News, Lee gave us a lot of fodder. He said he supports the Bush tax cuts, which doesn't surprise us as Lee is a millionaire and has received the tax breaks while the rest of Western New York's middle class has picked up the slack for him. He also said that while he supports a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, he believes the timetable should be made by the military and not the politicians (even though it is the politicians who will need to set such a timetable). Lee also supports the same free trade practices that have hurt Western New York and shipped many of our jobs out of state or out of the country.

So, as a Democrat, you have to ask yourself: Do you want two more years of Republican representation that has done nothing for NY-26? Do you want another representative in the mold of (and endorsed by) Tom Reynolds? If not, the only option is to vote for Alice Kryzan. If you want to continue the abysmal Republican leadership here in NY-26, you will vote for Chris Lee. It's that simple.

Believe me, it will take time for a lot of us who supported Jon Powers to come around. I can tell you that if Jack Davis won, many of us (including myself) would not rally behind him. There are things Kryzan will need to overcome, but when considering our options, she is the best option. She is progressive, she is a Democrat and she won't go to Washington and further a Republican agenda. Instead, she will go to Washington D.C. and push a progressive and Democratic agenda for our area and for our country.

When ready, we need to rally behind Alice Kryzan and give her our votes in November. It will be tough after supporting Jon for 14 months. Some will join sooner or later. But if we allow Chris Lee to walk into this seat, we won't be doing ourselves any favors. Once this seat goes Republican, it will stay Republican. So we need to make sure we are voting with this in mind come November 4. We need to vote for the best candidate. That candidate is Alice Kryzan.

NY-26: Kryzan Named To DCCC's Red To Blue List

by: robert.harding

Wed Sep 10, 2008 at 14:09:55 PM EDT

This didn't take long.

The DCCC announced today that Alice Kryzan has been immediately named to the "Red to Blue" list.

Following her victory in the Democratic Primary in New York's 26th Congressional District, Alice Kryzan has immediately been added to the DCCC's Red to Blue program for open seats. Alice Kryzan earned a spot in the competitive program by establishing significant local support and skillfully showing New York's voters that she stands for change and will represent new priorities.

"Congratulations to Alice Kryzan on her primary victory," said DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen. "Alice Kryzan is a strong leader who will fight to make college and health care more affordable, and lower gas prices. Alice Kryzan will be a formidable candidate in the general election. With 55 days left to make her case to the voters of the 26th district, the Red to Blue program will give Alice the financial and structural edge to be even more competitive."

They forgot to mention perhaps Kryzan's biggest platform piece. That is her support for a green economy in Western New York and her environmental platform. That is what she has been pushing since her entrance into this race.
