Great news, TAPers- SD-5 Challenger Matt Meng is coming by to answer your questions about his State Senate candidacy at 1 pm tomorrow!
This race hasn't been one of the most high-profile in our state, largely because Matt didn't throw his hat into the ring until July 14th. But in a Democratic wave (which seems like Long Island is ripe for this year), I can see him pulling off a victory. Furthermore, as of June 9th, the GOP only had a 7,000-and-change voter registration advantage over Democrats in the district, and I'm sure that margin has shrunk significantly since then.
The incumbent is Carl Marcellino, a real GOP anti-Environment thug. As chairman of the Senate's Environmental committee, he has been perhaps the biggest obstacle to the passage of the Bigger Better Bottle Bill.
But it's not just the environment, he's terrible on- he's against Equal Pay for Equal Work, was part of that shameful bloc of Long Island GOP Senators who yanked school aid from the 7th SD after Craig Johnson won his special election, he opposes campaign finance reform, and used campaign funds to make car payments for his personal car.
Put simply, Marcellino is among the worst of the worst in the GOP Senate Caucus, and we're lucky to have a challenger such as Matt to take him on this year.
Matt owns an auto repair shop and is a native of Oyster Bay. He is running largely on an environmental platform, but is also running against the culture of Albany's dysfunction. He has been endorsed by NARAL, Planned Parenthood, and the Long Island Environmental Voters Forum.
So please stop by tomorrow to ask him a few questions about his race, and I also highly recommend showing him some love over at his website.
