Bellavia Issues Press Release; Attacks Liberals and DCCC

by: robert.harding

Fri Apr 11, 2008 at 16:11:25 PM EDT

I won't express my thoughts until later. But here is the full press release e-mailed to me, apparently serving as some sort of explanation for David Bellavia.

Retired Army Staff Sergeant David Bellavia condemns the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's vicious attempt at character assassination.

"The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released a statement that intentionally misquotes what I actually said and is possibly slanderous. It is unfortunate that liberals are desperately employing the politics of personal destruction."

"I call on my fellow Republicans and the citizens of Western New York to join me in condemning the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and their friends in the liberal media who exploit, manipulate and smear veterans of the United States Military."

"I volunteered for the U.S. Army to protect and defend my country and our freedoms. I served beside soldiers of every race, culture and religion. Whether on the battlefield or at home, we are all simply Americans."

"Sadly, our celebrity-obsessed culture glorifies pop stars, athletes and entertainers rather than celebrating heroes like Michael Mansoor who freely make the ultimate sacrifice for the defense of our freedoms. That, simply, is and was my point. I believe honest Americans will agree."

"The reaction from the radical Left was predictable in their attempts to exploit an innocent remark I made. I can only say to them, 'enough,' I refuse to play your game."

Speech from Kansas City - March 27, 2008

Mr. Bellavia, a native of Buffalo, lives in western New York with his wife and two sons.  There he has founded a local Veteran's Coordination Center that focuses on the early treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and other veteran's-related issues and outreach programs.  Bellavia is also a co-founder of the non-partisan, non-profit Vets for Freedom organization.

I will have more on this later. But to say the least, I am infuriated.

NY-26: DCCC Will Stay Out Of Primary

by: robert.harding

Tue Apr 08, 2008 at 21:29:05 PM EDT

Rochester Turning gave great coverage to this today. From Newsday:

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee would like to avoid a bruising internal battle as they look to win the Republican district. Reynolds, a once-powerful member of the House GOP majority, announced last month he will not seek re-election.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, the head of the DCCC, told reporters in a conference call Monday that "we've got a number of good candidates up in that district."

Reynolds' district stretches from the suburbs of Buffalo to the Rochester area.

He specifically mentioned Jon Powers, an Iraq war vet, saying he "obviously got off to a very early start," racking up all but one of the county party endorsements.

...

The Maryland representative insisted he wasn't playing favorites by mentioning Powers and not Davis.

"It's an open process and everyone is obviously welcome to battle it out," Van Hollen said. "Obviously I mention (Powers) only because he appears to have a lot of momentum in the Democratic primary. ...From the national committee's perspective, we are not getting involved in the primary."

Van Hollen said the challenge for Democrats, both in upstate New York and around the country, will be to defy longtime political trends that see a national wave of election victories, such as the one that brought Democrats to power in 2006, followed by losses in the next election.

This is the right move by the DCCC. I'm also glad to see that someone (Van Hollen) values the endorsements Jon Powers has received so far. I think the endorsements are important and if Davis or Kryzan had received an endorsement or two, I think the process would be (and perhaps should be) more scrutinized. But there is a clear favorite in this race - no matter how you want to skew it.

NY-25: DCCC Adds Maffei to 'Red to Blue' Program

by: phillip anderson

Fri Jan 25, 2008 at 11:34:35 AM EST

Very good news for Dan Maffei and those of us who want to elect a strong progressive to succeed the retiring Jim Walsh.

Dan Maffei (NY-25) Named to DCCC's Red to Blue Program for Open Seats

The DCCC announced today that Dan Maffei (NY-25) will immediately be added to the Red to Blue program for open seats following Congressman Jim Walsh's announcement that he would not seek reelection. Democratic congressional candidates running in open seats earned a spot in the competitive program by surpassing demanding fundraising goals and by skillfully showing voters that they stand for change and will represent new priorities when elected to Congress. Maffei is one of only 11 candidates in the first round of the Red to Blue program for open seats and special elections.

"Dan Maffei is widely supported in Central New York, has a strong organization, and a compelling message of change for middle class families. The Red to Blue Program will give Dan the financial and structural edge to be even more competitive this year," said DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen. "Congressman Walsh's retirement makes the district an even stronger pick up opportunity for Democrats."

Very, very good news.

Van Hollen to Campaign with Massa

by: Michael Bouldin

Fri Aug 24, 2007 at 16:51:02 PM EDT

Via a press release from the Massa campaign comes the news that DCCC Chair Chris van Hollen (D-MD) will be campaigning with Eric Massa at noon on Monday, August 27th, at the Monroe County Democratic Committee in Rochester.

Considering both the frosty relationship between the DCCC and Eric Massa last time around, and Massa's narrow loss - 48% to 52% - early involvement by the nationals spells good news for an additional Democratic seat in Congress.

Meanwhile, incumbent Randy Kuhl is being targeted by an activist group, headed by known grassroots guy Ari Fleischer, for whom he's just not enough of a wingnut.

Some people, I guess, are just never happy.

David Nachbar and the DCCC: Somebody is Lying

by: phillip anderson

Thu Jul 26, 2007 at 14:13:16 PM EDT

David Nachbar has been telling folks that the DCCC is encouraging him to run for Randy Kuhl's seat in NY-29. Here's some video of him telling the Brighton, NY Democratic Town Committee just that.

But the DCCC begs to differ:

We met with both prospective candidates who each laid out their case for running against Rubber Stamp Randy. We listened and told both of them that we planned to aggressively support the Democratic nominee — and that we would not take sides in a primary. It’s up to voters in New York’s 29th district to decide who the Democratic nominee will be.

Somebody is lying here. Who is it?
