It's early yet, but the search for a credible Republican challenger to the excellent Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who will be running for a full six-year term in 2012, has again turned up Dan Senor, the neocon flack who worked for the Bush/Cheney campaign at the Coalition Provisional Authority in the Iraq War's first year.
The story in the Murdoch New York Post's gossip page is headlined "Dan Senor muses to friends about running for US Senate", and is an obvious trial balloon.

According to Liz Benjamin, former Bush-war-flack Dan Senor has decided not to challenge Senator Kirsten Gillibrand this year.
Senor had been on an informal, though well-publicized campaign trail for about two weeks, after GOP bigwigs like Rudy Giuliani and Sen. John Cornyn encouraged him to get in.
Now he won't, due to the usual family and business considerations.
Details, below.

Shocking, I know.
Senor Won't Run Against Gillibrand
In a sudden about-face, Dan Senor, who has been putting the pieces in place for a campaign against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, has just become the latest Republican to take a pass on challenging the Democratic junior senator.
Senor cited his family (his run would likely complicate things for his wife, CNN's Campbell Brown) and "business life" as the driving factors behind his decision.
His decision is a surprise, however. He was at the Monday Meeting just three days ago. There were reports that state GOP leaders wanted him to reconsider and challenge Sen. Chuck Schumer instead of Gillibrand - a move in which he showed no interest.
In recent weeks, Senor has been talking to New York and Washington, D.C consultants about a likely campaign and sources insisted he would announce this week - perhaps as early as today.
OK. Anyone else? Last Call!

According to Liz Benjamin, former Bush-war-flack Dan Senor will be granted an audience at the March 22 Monday Meeting, a monthly gathering of a few hundred rich wingnuts, mostly from Wall Street.
Senor is the all-but-declared Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in New York, challenging the excellent Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
Though his serial lying as chief spokesman for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq in 2003-04 would seem to disqualify him for any elected office, Senor has been welcomed by the GOP establishment as better than the other potential candidates.
One sure sign of that is an invitation to the Monday Meeting, which New York magazine described in 2005 as "The ATM for Bush's America."
More on Senor and the usual suspects, below.

The New York Times published a fluffy story a week ago about notorious Bush-war-flack Dan Senor running against the excellent Senator Kirsten Gillibrand this year.
Today, Times About New York columnist Jim Dwyer took a closer look at Senor's 2003-04 stint as chief flack for the Bush/Cheney regency in Iraq
It wasn't pretty.

The search for a Republican challenger to the excellent Senator Kirsten Gillibrand who is known beyond his family/friends has apparently found Dan Senor, according to the New York Times.
Senor is best known as the neocon flack who worked for the Bush/Cheney campaign at the Coalition Provisional Authority in the war's first year.
In keeping with its serial promotion of Gillibrand opponents, the Times spends less than a sentence on Senor in Iraq -- most of the story is about all the GOP bigwigs (Rudy 9/11, John Cornyn, Lindsay Graham, etc.) who are desperate for someone other than the two no-names who've announced so far.
Desperate indeed, to support a guy with Senor's risky record just because he's been on Fox News a lot and can raise the requisite money from the Bush/neocon network.
Details, below.

Helicopter Harry is out. And now so is Mort Zuckerman.
The field in the battle for a New York Senate seat became a little clearer Tuesday when Mortimer B. Zuckerman announced he would not join the race.
Mr. Zuckerman, chairman and publisher of the Daily News, said personal and professional reasons were behind his decision not to challenge Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
"I was encouraged by many major political figures in New York to look closely at running for Senate," Mr. Zuckerman said.
"However, at this time, it is very difficult to see how I can devote the necessary time to either a campaign, or to working in Washington, if I were to win."
OK. Duly noted.
