With over 97% in in all three counties, I'm gonna call this sucker. Darrel Aubertine is the next state Senator from New York's 48th District.

Really.

10:05 UPDATE:

All in from everywhere:

Aubertine 27901
Barclay   25345

Young Will would have to take better than 80% of the absentees. That ain't gonna happen.

We WIN.

SD-48: Liveblogging Special Election Results

by: phillip anderson

Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 18:08:26 PM EST

Many folks have emailed to ask if I will be liveblogging the results from today's special election in the 48th. My answer? Duh! Of course I am, silly. I mean, how could I not do so after our friends at Rochester Turning said that we've "been all over this race like a freakin' horde of locusts"?

I'll be here liveblogging as long as it takes, even if this thing goes really late, a distinct possibility. I hope you'll be here as well. I've got a good feeling about this one.

Less than three hours to go...

Post E-Day Results Roundup From The NY Dems

by: phillip anderson

Thu Nov 08, 2007 at 12:04:11 PM EST

Here's an interesting roundup of results from around the state from the New York State Democratic Party. Some highlights:

Nassau County: In Nassau County Democrats held control of the Nassau County Legislature. County Legislator Dave Mejias was re-elected in Joe Mondello's backyard despite being a top target of state and county Republicans. The district leans Republican. It also overlaps State Sen. Kemp Hannon's district.

Suffolk County: Democrats won historic victories - expanding their majority on the Suffolk County Legislature and defending against fierce GOP challenges against Democratic incumbents in two Republican leaning districts.
In Brookhaven Democratic Town Supervisor Brian Foley was re-elected and in Islip, Democrat Phil Nolan won a resounding victory for Supervisor and a new majority on his Town Board.
Suffolk victories came in precincts all across GOP State Senator Caesar Trunzo's district.

Dutchess County: Democrats have won a 13-12 on the County Legislature putting them in the majority for the first time since 1977. Democrats in Dutchess also won the Mayor's race in the town of Beacon.
These victories come in the backyard of GOP State Senator Stephen Saland.

Rockland County: In a major upset, Democrat Tom Zugibe, defeated 12 year GOP incumbent District Attorney Michael Bongiorno. Democrats also won all 5 Town Supervisor Races.
These victories come in the backyard of GOP State Senator Tom Morahan.

Worth a read.

Going Hyper Local

by: phillip anderson

Wed Nov 07, 2007 at 12:26:34 PM EST

I've spent the morning going over results from all over the state. The big picture looks pretty good, but I'm interested in some more local analysis. This is where you come in. What happened where you live? I can see the numbers, but you know what they mean.

Tell us how E-Day 2007 played out in your town. What looks good? What is troubling? What does any of this mean for 2008? What are the trends?

Simon at Living in Dryden has a fantastic wrapup of his local elections complete with an awesome table of results and trends. In the comments, neroden has a great summary of results from Tompkins County and Robert Harding reports from Orleans County.

Tell us what E-Day+1 looks like where you live.

GOP Perfect Storm Fizzled

by: phillip anderson

Wed Nov 07, 2007 at 08:37:24 AM EST

They huffed and they puffed and, well, not much happened. Though they tried and tried and tried, to make this election about the Governor's plan to allow undocumented workers to obtain drivers licenses, an issue they believed (and they were hardly alone) was a sure fire winner for them, in the end, the issue turned out to be largely a sheep in wolf's clothing. It's more complicated than that, of course. Dems in some key races campaigned actively against the policy, but the fact remains that, in what most observers judged to be an environment highly favorable to what remains of the NY GOP, they rather seriously underperformed. If I were a partisan of the NY GOP, I'd be awfully concerned this morning. This was obviously one of their last best chances to remain relevant statewide and their "scary brown people" gambit largely failed.

You can actually read the disappointment in the statement of state GOP chair Joe Mondello as quoted in this morning's Times:

While the results are still coming in, it is clear that New York's Republican Party has come a long way in the past 12 months.

Whatever, Joe.

More from the Times:

Democrats declared yesterday that Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants had not proved to be the electoral boon Republicans had hoped for in local elections, despite the Republicans' aggressive efforts to exploit overwhelming public opposition to the proposal.

Though Democrats appeared to expand their majority in the Legislature in Suffolk County, Republicans were not ready to concede a pivotal Nassau County legislative race, and pointed to significant victories in several county races upstate as evidence of a Republican resurgence in the state.

...

In many parts of the state, turnout appeared to be even lower than usual for an off-year election, despite Republican hopes that the licensing issue would drive Republican voters to the polls.

Though anger clearly existed over Mr. Spitzer's proposal - as well as his bout with scandal and his battles with Albany Republicans - many local races appeared to hinge, as they traditionally do, on local issues like property taxes and municipal services, or on the specific strengths and weaknesses of the candidates themselves.

...

In Monroe County, Democrats won one hard-fought legislative seat despite a late effort to blanket the area with mailers that charged local Democrats with aiding terrorists because of their support for Mr. Spitzer's licensing plan.

Though the seat will not by itself swing control of the County Legislature, Democrats hope it will presage a strong effort next year against two Rochester-area Republicans in the State Senate.

Like I said, it's certainly more complex than appears at first glance, and there are plenty of local races upstate to analyze, but the fact remains that the GOP was looking for much more than they got.

That's gotta hurt.

Election Results Thread

by: phillip anderson

Tue Nov 06, 2007 at 18:50:32 PM EST

OK, we've got about two hours and change until the polls close, but I want to go ahead and get this thread open. If you are looking for election results, I'll be posting them here all night. If you've got results from a local race, please feel free to post them here. I'm also interested in any and all unfounded and reckless gossip. Really.

I'll tell you that there are some races I am paying more attention to than others. I'm very curious to see how the Mejias and Mizra races play out in Nassau County, the Rockland County DA race, the local races in Islip and Brookhaven in Suffolk County, County legislature races in Erie County, the local races out in Monroe County that have been so well covered by our friends at Rochester Turning, the County Exec race in Dutchess County and ,of course, some local races in Uncle Joe's backyard, Rensselaer County.

Should be an interesting night...

UPDATE 1: That Rockland County DA's race looks good so far. With 14% reporting:

Thomas P Zugibe (D)  3,711
Michael E Bongiorno (R) 3,164

UPDATE 2: Our good friend Andrew C. White, as well as the other great Dems in Stephentown come up short:

White (D) - 417
Sherman ( R ) - 575

Council:
Eckhardt ( R ) - 630
Prescott - ( R ) - 596
Jennings - ( D ) - 413
McEwan - ( D ) - 374

Highway Superintendent:
Gardner ( R ) - 588
Sykes ( D ) - 467

D.A.:
Cholakis ( R ) - 503
McNally ( D ) - 455

Yeah, even the guy who got arrested last night won.

UPDATE 3: In the Dutchess County Exec race, with 47% reporting:

Joe Ruggiero (D) 12,974
William R Steinhaus (R) 14,199

UPDATE 4: Encouraging news from Nassau County (their BoE website hates me, btw)

DAVID L MEJIAS D 5,671
DAVID L MEJIAS W 252 5,923
JOSEPH V BELESI R 4,867
JOSEPH V BELESI C 837 5,704

We just might pull this one off...

UPDATE 5: by NYBri Dutchess County Legislature flipped and is now 13-12 Dem majority. Bet you Bill Steinhaus won't have a fun couple of years.

UPDATE 6: Staten Island DA race is a blowout.
