The genetic discrimination ban that has been championed by New York's own Rep. Louise Slaughter has finally faced a vote.
And it passed. 95 to 0.
The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2007 (H.R. 493) passed the Senate yesterday afternoon setting up a vote in the House. The bill will face no obstacles in the House and President George W. Bush has said in the past that he supports this legislation.
This bill would do the following:
To prohibit discrimination on the basis of genetic information with respect to health insurance and employment.
Employers could not use genetic information against you to prevent you from getting a job. Health insurance agencies could not use it against you either to avoid covering you under their plans.
This is a huge victory, especially for Slaughter. She has championed this legislation for a long time.
