Well, the inevitable seems to be in the works. The NYS legislature, judged by the Brennan Center to be among the nation's most dysfunctional, is considering giving itself a nice big pay hike.
This from The Ithaca Journal: (empahsis mine)
ALBANY - New York lawmakers, whose pay now ranks third in the country, could vote themselves a raise next month of more than 20 percent that would put them again near the top, a state-government analyst said Monday.
"If I had to bet, I'd say they're going to do it," said Edmund McMahon of the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank.

If lawmakers don't raise their pay before the first of the year, they cannot do it before 2009 at the earliest. The state constitution prohibits lawmakers from raising their own salaries. But by doing it before the end of an election year, they can have the hike take effect in what is technically a new Legislature that was elected on Nov. 7. However, most of the lawmakers serving now were re-elected to new terms in this month's elections.
