This is interesting. According to a release from the Governor's office, Deputy Secretary for Public Safety, former GOP senator Michael Balboni, is resigning. Oh, and his last day is a week from today. This all seems rather abrupt.
Governor David A. Paterson today accepted with regret the resignation of Deputy Secretary for Public Safety Michael Balboni. Mr. Balboni's resignation will become effective on February 2, 2009, when he will begin work in the private sector. Governor Paterson announced that Denise E. O'Donnell, Commissioner of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and Assistant Secretary to the Governor for Criminal Justice, will be appointed as Deputy Secretary for Public Safety. Commissioner O'Donnell will retain her post at DCJS.
"Since his time in both the State Legislature and the Governor's office, Deputy Secretary for Public Safety Michael Balboni has provided invaluable leadership and counsel to the Executive Chamber," Governor Paterson said. "His commitment to the security of the people of New York improved our State's emergency preparedness and response, which we will never take for granted. I am grateful to Michael for his service and wish him well with his future endeavors."
"As Commissioner of DCJS, Denise O'Donnell has proven to be a highly effective, energetic and creative administrator," Governor Paterson added. "I have enormous confidence in Denise and I am certain she will continue to serve the citizens of New York State with great distinction."
Didn't see this one coming.

This is sweet. Michael Balboni, former Republican state Senator in SD-07, just seriously dented coming efforts by Uncle Joe to take back the seat won by Craig Johnson in last year's special election. Check this out:
And then Secretary Balboni acknowledged his successor in the Senate, state Senator Craig Johnson. "You are very well-represented now by Senator Craig Johnson," the Republican Balboni said of his Democratic successor.
I hope there is video of this. It would make a great TV spot.

Now even Michael Balboni, the same Michael Balboni pictured in Maureen O'Connell's totally nutty Osama Bin Laden flyer, doesn't want anything to with it. In fact, he "was not aware" of the mailing he says. Newsday has more.
Final push in Nassau state Senate race
A new campaign flier that pairs O'Connell with Balboni, the district's former Republican senator who resigned to become the state's homeland security chief, hit mailboxes Friday.
It features a photo of bin Laden and states, "As long as New York and Tel Aviv are targets for terrorists, we need Maureen O'Connell protecting us in the Senate." Inside, there is a photo of O'Connell next to Balboni in front of a mock-up of the state Homeland Security seal.
Balboni said he has not endorsed any candidate and was not aware of the mailing. "To the extent that it implies that there is a governmental agency supporting the candidacy of anybody, that is incorrect and inappropriate," he said.
State homeland security office spokesman Dennis Michalski added in a statement, "It is completely inappropriate for a political candidate to use a falsified state seal in the context of a political campaign."
National Jewish Democratic Council also blasted the mailing. "This is a desperate and shameful attempt to try to use Israel as a wedge issue," said deputy executive director David Goldenberg.
Nice.

I admittedly don't know all that much about Nassau County Politics, so I've been learning quite a lot about the coming special election in SSD-07 from the reporting of Newsday, which is in my mind THE go-to source for reportage on this race. They've got a great story in this morning's edition that offers quite a bit of great info on the players and the dynamics of what is shaping up to be an enormously significant election for the future of the NY GOP, the state Senate and, ultimately for the future of New York itself. The stakes are high and the players know it.
POWER & POLITICS: Stakes high for GOP stalwarts
While Nassau County Clerk Maureen O'Connell is running only for Michael Balboni's former state Senate seat in next month's special election, the fates of New York's few remaining top Republican leaders may rest on her campaign.
For Nassau GOP boss Joseph Mondello, newly named state chairman, it is a major test of strength in his own backyard only a month after taking over the state party in the wake of Gov. Eliot Spitzer's landslide.
For Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno (R-Brunswick), 77, already under federal investigation for his outside business activities, a loss could break his hold on his diminishing 33-28 GOP Senate majority, endangering his 12-year reign.

We'll call this the "catching up" edition.
Bruno probe was months in making. (Albany Times Union)
The U.S. grand jury investigating the link between Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno and a suspected lobbyist has been taking testimony since at least April 13, according to a subpoena disclosed Tuesday.
The Temporary State Commission on Lobbying received a notice to provide information to the grand jury in Albany on March 14, giving commission staff a month to provide investigative material it had collected on Bruno, according to a subpoena released by the commission under the state Freedom of Information Law.

Federal authorities investigating the business activities of Joseph L. Bruno, the State Senate majority leader, have issued a subpoena to a lawyer who arranged for Mr. Bruno to fly to Kentucky for a fund-raising reception in October 2005, according to a person who was briefed on the investigation.
The lawyer, Wayne R. Barr Jr., is a friend of Mr. Bruno's and, like the senator, an enthusiast of thoroughbred racing. Mr. Barr is also a longtime business associate of Jared E. Abbruzzese, another friend of Mr. Bruno's whose payments to the senator's private consulting business are being scrutinized as part of the investigation.
