NY-26 & NY-29: Major General John Batiste, U.S. Army, Retired and Major General Paul D. Eaton, U.S. Army, Retired showed their support for Democratic candidates for Congress Jon Powers (NY-26) and Eric Massa (NY-29) today. I will have the write-up of this later today or early tomorrow as I'm on the road much of today. In the interim, here are a few photos from today's event.

To say that I was awed by General Batiste and General Eaton is an understatement. They are both highly intelligent, well-versed in the issues of the military and in particular the war in Iraq, and they are both true American heroes. It was an honor to meet with them and it was inspiring to see how dedicated they are to supporting veterans.

I spend way too much time reading and replying to blogs than is probably good for me. There's too many times its plain to me that some of the comments come from people with a vested financial interest in their candidate. Sometimes I get riled up and feel powerless beyond leaving comments in the ether net of the Internet. I know the attacks and comments aren't to build support for Davis and Lee. Instead, it's their hired guns trying to get at Powers' enthusiastic and activated supporters because both Republicans......I mean Jack and the other Republican.....I mean Jack and the Republican are excruciatingly aware that they can't come near the breadth of Jon's grassroots support nor approach the enthusiasm Jon's supporters share. Instead, the intent of their attacks is to try to dampen that enthusiasm and undermine the established support. I have to admit that sometimes reading their mercenary attacks and comments leaves me frustrated and angry.
But then something happened at the Powers' Leroy phone bank. I began to wonder why I felt so much better about our everything. And I realized that phone banking and canvassing are my antidote to the salaried trolls on the blogs and the campaign hacks that spoon feed pliable 'reporters'. Maybe I can't write a big check. Maybe I don't have my own millions to pay people to cruise websites just to drop bombs on qualified candidates. But, I can make a stand at the phone banks and I can gain territory on the canvass trail. Its guerrilla campaigning, the kind of campaigning that suits me just fine.
So, the next time I feel the urge to fling myself headlong into my monitor and grapple with some paid flack who's misrepresenting Jon Powers, I'll remind myself of how it feels to actually accomplish something in the real world. Don't get me wrong; I'll still post and comment. I'm no angle. But, I'll know that I'm also out doing much more for my candidate than the black-hat gunslingers are doing for theirs.
