Recently, I found that I could no longer access the blog that I used to keep up with events in the North Country, Danger Democrat. First, I got a message saying that DD was "in hiatus," now, I get this message:
Blog has been removed
Sorry, the blog at dangerdemocrat.blogspot.com has been removed. This address is not available for new blogs.
It left me concerned about DD's health.
Then, today, I tried to read Rochester Turning and got this message:
This account has been suspended
Please contact the support department as soon as possible, and please have your site name ready.
Are the Bushie Internet Police just messing with me? What happens when you try? Know anything?

The good folks at Rochester Turning have passed a major milestone. They've now posted over 5,000 diaries and 20,000 comments. It's a hell of an achievement. Now, they are looking for new talent to join the team.
Hey RT community! Guess what– we’ve passed our 5000th diary! It happened sometime late last week. This means we’ve written an average of 6 articles per day over the last 2 years or so. And that’s not just writing, it’s research, interviews, site maintenance and upgrades, team building, and talent recruitment.
That’s a lot of work for a bunch of part-time hacks who apparently hate America (according to Sarah Palin and the right-wing). But we’re glad to do it if it helps make our corner of the country even a little better. But man, I’m going to drink like a pitcher of margueritas when this election is over.
Speaking of talent recruitment, we’re looking for a few good people. RT is a team of part-time, team-oriented political junkies. We’re movement progressives and all about getting a progressive point of view out into the local narrative. If that sounds interesting to you, and you’d like to contribute a guest essay or two, contact us and let’s talk. If you have writing samples that you can send us, all the better.
RT is the best local blog in the state and quite possibly the best blog in all of New York. If you've got the time and the local expertise, this is a great opportunity to get involved with a fantastic site.
Congrats, RT! A tip of the hat to ya...

A few folks have emailed over the past few days about over the top mailers they are getting about the governor's drivers license plan, but none of them can top this from our friends at Rochester Turning.

Yikes. Note the keffiyeh on the dude on the license. Nice.
Have you gotten anything like this in the mail? If so, please get clear digital pictures and send them to me or post them yourself. Maybe we'll have a contest for the most insanely over the top piece of scary, scary mail.

Our good friends over at Rochester Turning have been on one hell of a roll lately. It appears that roll isn't likely to end anytime soon. RT contributor Jrviper has a great story up this morning. This story has it all and perfectly captures the utter nuttiness of how our state Senate protects its incumbents in election years and just how damn nutty some of those Senators actually are. Add in public money being used for overtly political purposes, our former and current Attorneys General defending these state Senators against a copyright infringement suit, a certain pistol packin' Congressman with some truly exceptional hair and some of the other personalities involved and you have such a completely ridiculous story that it could have only happened in New York.
NYS Senate Republicans Implicated in Copyright Suit
According to court documents recently obtained by RT, several current and former NYS Senators are facing suit in Federal District Court for the Northern District of New York for alleged copyright infringement. Among the notable defendants are none other than George Winner, whom you’ll recall is spearheading the NYS Senate “investigation” into troopergate, and John “Rootin’ Tootin’” Randy Kuhl, currently a US Congressman.
...
The complaint filed August 10, 2006, by Student Lifeline, Inc., alleges Winner and other NYS GOP Senators, along with Kuhl, when Kuhl was in the NYS Senate, conspired to produce and distribute unauthorized copies of something called the “Private Child I.D. Kit.” From what I can gather, this Kit was, in essence, something used to create I.D. cards for children with important information (i.e. name, address, etc…) in the event the child was ever lost or missing.
Apparently, some NYS Senators had a business agreement to buy the Kits from Student Lifeline, complete with a picture of the Senator, for distribution amongst the Senator’s constituents. Student Lifeline alleges Senator Kemp Hannon had such an agreement, but backed off when he found out he could get free copies of the Kit from his Republican buddies in the Senate. Those buddies, it’s alleged, would end up producing and distributing, with public funds, the Student Lifeline I.D. Kits, tailored for each Senator’s district, in violation of Student Lifeline’s copyright on the Kit.
That's right. This company makes deals with Republican state Senators to produce these child ID kits withe the Senator's picture on them. These Senators then decide they'll just produce and distribute them on their own, tailor them to each Senator's district and do it all with public funds. Oh, and violate this company's copyright in the process.
Crazy, right? It gets much weirder on the flip...

I've long considered Rochester Turning to be one of the best blogs in the state. When people outside of New York ask me about New York blogs they should read (and they ask this often, mind you) I always mention RT.
That's why I was flabbergasted when I read yesterday at the Albany Times Union's blog, Capitol Confidential, that they had never heard of RT.
Those blogs just keep coming. Maybe its Trooper/Spitzergate or 08 but the blogosphere is hosting more and more political sites, it seems each day.
Here are two new ones that I was previously unaware of until some helpful readers e-mailed me.
...
On the left is the Rochester-based Rochesterturning blog where blogger Jvriper criticizes Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno’s fundraising tactics, noting that the Senator has collected $25,000 in interest alone since January, according to the July filing.
(Also note that the folks at Cap Con didn't even provide a link.)
That the writers of what is likely the most widely read political site in New York were completely unaware of one the state's best written and most effective blogs is completely astounding. It's even worse when you consider that RT front pager Jrviper is making the rest of the statewide media look silly by completely owning them on a potentially significant story. This is citizen journalism at its finest and it should shame those in the media who have so far been completely unaware of such a great site and the great work that they do.
Jrviper is smacking the hell out of this story. He's doing the media's job because they apparently won't. They should start paying attention because this story ain't no joke. Here's a taste:
Allegations Swirling Around Bruno
As a defense to our previous post on Joe Bruno’s apparently illegal corporate campaign contributions, an unnamed republican staffer made the following claim:
In fact I recognized at least one company listed where I know that the donation was returned because they hit their limit.
Unfortunately for the unnamed staffer, this claim compelled RT to rebut his claims and to further examine Bruno’s campaign finance records. As you will see, it appears this returned contribution may be much more than a simple mistake.
Much more on the flip...

The New York State Democratic Committee is holding their Spring Meeting tomorrow in Albany. For the first time the meetings will be covered by a number of credentialed bloggers, myself included. I'll be joined by our very own NYBri as well as liza and Bouldin from the snazzy new Daily Gotham and some of our friends from the always excellent Rochester Turning.
The very fact that we will be there is significant in my mind. The party's new Co-Chairs, June O'Neill and Dave Pollak deserve a lot of credit for opening up this meeting to us and I want to thank party Executive Director Edna Ishayik for going to great lengths to ensure that we have Wi-Fi as well as a separate room for on camera interviews.
Look for much coverage of the proceedings all day tomorrow as well as plenty of video in the days to follow.
To Albany!

Randy Kuhl/Rochester Turning Day continues here at TAP. This time there is something we can all do. RT has a post up about a two year old that is about to be without either parent because both of her parents are soon to be deployed to Iraq. This can not stand.
Is Randy Kuhl is down with sending both of a 2 month old's parents to Iraq?
I'm sensing this might be one of those stories where a crisis happens and nobody helps… until the media gets involved. Lets hope a little coverage and some phone calls can garner support from Congressman Kuhl's… Here's some highlights from the story.
Her duty as a mother has kept her at home to take her of her two month old daughter Brooke. But now, Dolly Mast's duty as a soldier will send her to Iraq. That will leave little Brooke without both of her parents, because her father is already fighting overseas. … "I'm upset because she's going to be so little. I'm going to miss a lot, like her crawling and teething," said Mast. … She says the family has called U.S. Congressman Randy Kuhl, U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton and even the President. They're pleading to keep brook's mom at home until her father can return from Iraq. But so far, no one has responded.
Let's all give Randy's office a call and tell him we don't support leaving a baby without both parents.

Randy's Fairport Office: 585 223-4760

Rep Randy Kuhl (NY-29) has never been one of the more impressive of GOoPer Reps. He's always been pretty unremarkable, a get along go along shlub. (though he does a fantastic hair.) These days it appears the wingnut wing of the Republican party is doing everything they can to coerce his compliance with their agenda, making him all the more vulnerable in 2008. It looks to me as if they will get everything they want from Kuhl in this Congress, then they are going to lose him.
What am I talking about? Well, first Randy had to go on record as supporting our idiot President's "plan" for escalating the war in Iraq. Yeah, that's going to play well in 2008, especially against a candidate like Eric Massa. Now we find out that Randy has voted against labor legislation that he co-sponsored. This is the second time he's done that. True, this may be nothing more than a FU to the unions who supported Massa last cycle, but Kuhl has generally been one of the more sympathetic GOoPs to labor issues. It's even more remarkable when one looks at the 13 Republican reps who voted with the Democratic majority on the Employee Free Choice Act, a group that the Fighting 29th describes as "a Whos-Who of vulnerable Northeast Republicans."
Now he's being pressured to support building a multi-billion dollar boondoggle of a wall along the Mexican border. How so? Let the fine folks at Rochester Turning explain:
Fighting29th has a postup about why Kuhl is pinned down into supporting the war to the hilt: if he strays off the grounds of the right-wing loony bin, he may face a primary challenger or, what might be worse, a conservative party line challenger in the general. Apparently, Bob Lonsberry is threatening to run against him support a primary challenger against Kuhl unless Randy gets behind a plan to build a moat along the Mexican border.
To quote Borat, "Very Nice!"

According to our good friends at Rochester Turning, Eric Massa, who came up just a bit short in his attempt to unseat Rep Randy (un)Kuhl in NY-29 last cycle, will announce next week whether or not he will run again for that seat in 2008. He's been down in DC this week consulting with the wise men according to the Elmira Star Gazette.
Massa to decide soon on House run
Democrat Eric Massa of Corning, who came close to unseating Republican Rep. John R. Kuhl Jr. in November, said today he will announce next week whether he will seek a rematch with the congressman.
Massa, a retired Naval officer, is in the nation's capital this week seeking the advice of Democratic Party leaders and members of Congress as he weighs whether to run again. Among the Democrats he met with were Reps. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., Brian Higgins, D-N.Y. and Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y.
Next week, Massa plans to meet with officials of the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He also hopes to meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. He already has met with DNC Chairman Howard Dean.
"The first thing they all say to me is, `You came so close. Are you going to do it again?' " Massa said.
Of course he's going to run again. In fact, he hardly stopped running after he lost in November.
If I lived in the Fighting 29th, he'd have my vote simply for this:
"We need to stand up and say the war is wrong," Massa said.
Hear hear.

Some things happening around the blogosphere of note:
MyDD profiles Andrea Batista Schlesinger from our good friends at the Drum Major Institute.
There's a new site upstate, a scoop blog called Upstate Blue that I am very excited about. Good luck, Colin!
I'm totally mining Upstate Blue's blogroll and adding these sites to our roll: McHugh Watch and The Walsh Watch.
Speaking of other people's blogs, I want to remind you that Tuesday will be the first "broadcast" of our new radio show. For the first couple of shows, I want to focus on the state of the New York blogosphere. I want to talk to other bloggers from around the state. I want to find hear what they think about where we are, where we are going and to talk about ways that we can work together to achieve common goals. I also want to find out about what is going on locally where they live.
The show will be live at 7:30pm and you can listen online or listen later as the show will be packaged for streaming and podcast minutes after we are off the "air". You'll also be able to call in to the show or submit questions or comments via IM or email.
Bouldin of Daily Gotham and TAP has agreed to participate and DIA from Democracy In Albany may participate via email or IM. I want to talk to more upstate folks for the first program so, if you are interested, drop me a line. (Rochester Turning, i'm lookin' at you...) You can find more info about the show here.
