The December 12th headlines of El Diario la Prensa reported results from a poll, showing that 84% of Hispanics support immigration and 35% of Hispanics support legalized abortion. Your presentation of these statistics twisted the good news of your findings regarding abortion. It appears from the reported poll findings that the majority - all 65% of Hispanics actually oppose abortion.

Actually, Senator, 35% of Hispanics supporting legalized Abortion means that Hispanics are generally in line with American opinions on abortion as a whole, which as recently as 2003, showed 39% of Americans want Abortion to be "Generally Available."  

However that does not mean that all of the remainder are anti-choice.  More likely, it means that like all Americans, roughly another third thinks Abortion should be "more restricted" but not completely illegal.  

Senator Diaz criticizes El Diario, saying their "journalistic integrity is clearly in question."  Actually, Senator, your integrity is in question.  You are misleading people and your constituents about public opinion on a serious issue.   Very sad indeed.

How would Rev Diaz have felt if he knew some of those licenses were going to gay immigrants?

The Gay Marriage Battle Begins...

A conservative group fired back today on Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s proposal for gay marriage, calling on lawmakers to oppose it.

The “Coalition to Save Marriage in New York” issued a release saying that Spitzer’s bill “would completely redefine the bedrock institution of our society in an effort to please a special interest group…Our state government should do everything possible to strengthen and reinforce the institution of marriage. The proposed legislation would do the opposite.”

Nice. Oh, and let's not forget state Senator Rev, Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx). He's chimed in as well.

"This is a slap in the face to the millions of New Yorkers who support the moral, legal and traditional definition of marriage as between man and woman," Senator Diaz stated. "In the minds of millions of New Yorkers, legalizing gay marriage is against our religious beliefs."

It's gonna be a wild ride...
