'Creating Big Change Moments' Tonight In NYC

by: phillip anderson

Tue Feb 10, 2009 at 16:10:31 PM EST

There's a great even happening tonight in NYC and I hope you'll be able to come out for it. In celebration of Open Left co-founder Mike Lux's new book, The Progressive Revolution: How the Best in America Came to Be, The Tank and Living Liberally is hosting a discussion called "Creating Big Change Moments". Check out the lineup:

Participants: Gara LaMarche, President and CEO of Atlantic Philanthropies; Eli Pariser, Executive Director of MoveOn.org; Mike Lux, President of Progressive Strategies, L.L.C.; moderated by Laura Flanders, journalist, author and host of GRITtv.

What will be America's next progressive revolution?  After all, since our country's founding, it has been progressive momentum that created a social safety net and ended slavery, that enfranchised voters and protected the environment.  Coming out of years of conservative governance, and facing overwhelming economic, international and environmental problems, can we even hope for a next "big change moment" in America?

Join three longtime progressive movement veterans for a roundtable discussion of America's past progressive revolutions, why they happened, and what it will take to get to the next one. From funding the movement to learning what needs to be done online to overcoming the problems that plague cooperative work, this discussion will help progressive activists strategize on how we make the next several years into a time of major progressive change.

This event celebrates the publication of The Progressive Revolution by Mike Lux, and continues the discussion laid out in the book.  The book will be available for sale at the event, or you can reserve a copy with your admission at a discount by clicking here.

354 West 45th Street (between 8th and 9th Avenues) (Take the A, C or E train to 42nd Street/Port Authority, or take the 1, 2 or 3 train to 42nd Street/Times Square)

It should be a great event and I so hope all of you in and near the city can make it. Don't think you can make it? No problem. I'm going to bring the event to you. Really.

Beginning tonight at 6:30 7pm, I will be streaming the event via Ustream. You can watch, take part in a live chat and even embed the feed on your own site.

Pretty cool, huh?

The Tank Is Losing Its Home...Again

by: phillip anderson

Mon Jul 07, 2008 at 18:05:11 PM EDT

Sad news. the Tank is losing its home. If you are involved in progressive politics in NYC, you know the tank. They've hosted all manner of events over the years. Whether it was the hosting of bloggers during the RNC or fundraisers for YearlyKos or Netroots Nation or Laughing Liberally performances or whatever, the Tank has been a vital part of the progressive community and the Arts scene in this town for over 5 years. From the Tank:

The Tank, a non-profit venue that has been providing a creative, collaborative home for emerging artists for the past five years, is about to need a new home of its own. But for this young company that moved 3 times in its first 3 years, this is familiar, if undesirable, territory.

Forced to leave its current home by July 31st, The Tank will continue presenting in this period of transition. But by August, this collective of performing arts and public affairs will move into a temporary space, while it searches for a more stable, long-term venue for 2009. As of now, neither the transitional venue nor the next home are determined.

Damage caused by massive plumbing problems, compounded by irreconcilable issues with the building's owner, has created a costly, unwelcome and untenable situation at 279 Church Street in Tribeca, where The Tank had made its home with the performing arts presenters Collective: Unconscious (C:U) since January, 2006. At this time, C:U also intends to continue presenting, although is unsure where.

...

A home for theater, dance, mixed media, music, comedy, film, community events and public discussions, The Tank presents 300 events a year, welcoming over 10,000 audience members at capped, affordable ticket prices. Additionally, The Tank does not charge performers or presenters, making it a unique spot in Manhattan where artists can take risks without the prohibitive financial burden of most venues.

The Tank, which recently celebrated its 5th anniversary and received a Proclamation from City Council for its cultural contributions, ironically just hosted a public discussion on the challenges facing independent arts venues in New York. At a time when an increasing number of small venues have been closing, The Tank's ability to survive three moves, skyrocketing rent, floods, burglaries, blackouts and an IRS audit was cause for pride and even celebration.

When alternative comedy hub Mo Pitkins announced its closing last year, The Tank publicly invited any of its displaced shows to find a transitional home at The Tank. Now, in a role reversal, The Tank is looking to its friends and allies for leads on office space, storage, a multi-use performance area for the short-term, and the space and financial support for a more permanent home.

It's tough news for sure, but the folks at the Tank have been through this before and I have no doubt that they'll land on their feet once again. And you can help. They currently need:

Short term office and storage space
An interim performance space
A long term performance and office space

If you have any suggestions for a new home for The Tank, or just wish to be part of the dialogue please email manager (at) thetanknyc (dot) org. Or call The Tank at 212-563-6269.

If you can be of any help at all, please get in touch. The Tank has hosted us all at one point or another. Hopefully, we can help return the favor.

DIRECTIONS: A, C, E, J, M, Z, N, Q, R, W, Z, or 6 to Canal Street

What is a MEGA Meetup, you ask?

The MEGA Meetup is an opportunity for local progressive organizations, grassroots activists and the netroots to meet, exchange ideas and brainstorm about issues of concern to us all. We'll talk informally for the first hour or so, then have a short 30-minute program where a rep from each group will describe their mission and, if they want, provide suggestions of how we might all work together. The bigger, long-term goal of the MEGA Meetup is for progressive activists and the netroots to coordinate our efforts as we move toward the '08 elections (and beyond).

A MEGA Meetup is way overdue, no?

Groups and blogs participating include:
ACT-Now
The Albany Project
Capitol D
The Daily Gotham
DailyKos (New York and metro area)
Democrats.com
DFNYC
Drum Major Institute
Living Liberally (Eating, Drinking, Laughing, etc.)
Manhattan Young Democrats
New Democratic Majority
Progressive Democrats of America

Tasty food will be provided by Eating Liberally(donations appreciated) and beer and wine are available at The Tank's cash bar.

A Laughing Liberally performance is scheduled for 8:30. If you would like to stay to hear some great Liberal comedy, stay for the show, which begins at 8:30. Tickets are normally $10, but are ONLY $5 for Meetup Attendees. For line-up and more info check out laughingliberally.com.

This is going to be a big--I mean MEGA--event. I hope you'll be able to come!

A special thanks to Justin Krebs and The Tank for arranging the space for us to meet, and to Kerry Trueman and Eating Liberally, for preparaing delicious food to keep us going.

Two NYC Events This Week. OK, Three Events

by: phillip anderson

Tue May 29, 2007 at 15:05:15 PM EDT

For those in the NYC area, there are three pretty cool events happening this week.

First up: I'll be part of a discussion tomorrow night (May 30) with our own NYBri about running a netroots campaign. Or something. The discussion will be moderated by Jeffrey Feldman and will take place at the Tank.

FROM BLOG TO BALLOT BOX: Framing the Netroots Campaign

Since Howard Dean first put out the call for all Americans to consider running for office, a number of bloggers have launched campaigns. Only now, in the wake of the tremendous gains of the 2006 election cycle, do we have a chance to learn from those members of the netroots who orchestrated the challenging move from blog to ballot box.

Joining in a conversation on these and other questions, Brian Keeler will share his experience running in the tight race for State Senate in New York's 41st district. Keeler began his political activism as writer and founding member of two online organizations, Political Cortex and ePluribus Media, the largest citizen investigative journalism organization on the Internet. It was from these prominent points on the netroots that he mounted an innovative campaign to unseat a long-time incumbent in New York's Hudson River Valley. Joining Keeler will be Phillip Anderson, a blogger, filmmaker and activist and an integral part of the Keeler campaign's communications team.

In a discussion moderated by author and blogger Jeffrey Feldman (Framing the Debate, Ig Publishing 2007), Keeler and Anderson will discuss the experience and challenges of running a campaign--telling stories and recounting first-hand the dynamics of stepping up to run for office.

Starts at 7.

Next up: Thursday on a very special Drinking Liberally... It's DL's 4th B-day! Join us at the original DL at Rudy's in Hell's Kitchen.

Political change is brewing all across the country...and the brewmasters are not the Presidential hopefuls - they are the grassroot, volunteer leaders of Drinking Liberally*, the national network of progressive social clubs that
turns 4-years-old at the end of this month. Whether you find politics naturally intoxicating, or just looking to share a few ideas while you share a pitcher, *Drinking Liberally* has become your home for "promoting democracy one pint at a time."

Founded in the spring of 2003, shortly after the launch of the Iraq War and during the darkest days for liberal Americans, *Drinking Liberally* began as a free, informal, inclusive, weekly opportunity to raise questions and ideas while raising a pint with like-minded, left-leaning libation-lifters.  Now, in 200 cities and towns, conservative strongholds and liberal oases across the country, *Drinking Liberally* is raising the spirits and pride of local liberals, as they raise hell to create a better America.

More on the flip...

YearlyKos Fundraiser Tomorrow Night in NYC!

by: phillip anderson

Fri Mar 09, 2007 at 17:31:25 PM EST

I just want to remind those in the NYC area about tomorrow night's fundraiser for this year's YearlyKos Convention! It's going to be a great event with some great folks in attendance. You'll be able to meet Plameologist extraordinaire Marcy Wheeler ("emptywheel"), author of the definitive book on the subject, Anatomy of Deceit: How the Bush Administration Used the Media to Sell the Iraq War and Out a Spy. She'll be on hand to sign copies of her book as well.

You'll also be able to meet one of my all time favorite cartoonists, Mr "This Modern World" himself, Tom Tomorrow.

And you'll get to see me do the coolest thing I've done in quite sometime. I will have the honor of introducing my Congresswoman, the Honorable and totally awesome Rep Nydia Velazquez! How cool is that?

The event is being sponsored by Living Liberally, Vaster Books, Young People For The American Way, the NYC Kossack Community and us here at TAP.

In honor of Marcy's book, the fine folks at Eating Liberally have prepared a great Menu Of Mass Deception including; Plame-broiled mini-burgers, pigs-in-a-blanket-denial, leak tartlets, roasted Russert potatoes, Scooter pies, & no-uranium yellow cake. The verdict is in, and it's tasty! Come savor the delightful flavor of skewered scapegoat!

It's going to be a great event. I sure hope you'll come out and play.
